new vstrom owner

Hi, looking for some advice. Just bought new 2012 650 adventure, looking to fit skid plate and spots, does anyone have views on which brand to fir. I have looked at touratech and twisted throttle..... any others? What are the other "must have" options?

Probably a lot of advice on what accessories (farkles) to get for your bike will be that the best ones for you are the ones that best fit your needs/desires/pocketbook. If I were to recommend one absolutely necessary accessory, it would be a center stand, right off the bat.

Good ones to have include a auxiliary fuse block, EB headlight relay, heated handgrips for cold weather riding, a better, aftermarket windshield, an aftermarket seat if the stock seat just doesn't agree with you. You indicated that yours is an adventure model, so you already have some pretty good options that come with the bike, however, as good as the suspension is (improved over the '04--'11 suspension) some will advocate doing an upgrade, but only you will be able to tell if you need better than stock.

Pretty much, it's hard to know what you'll want from the start, but as time goes by and you put more time on the bike, it will become apparent to you what you will need. There are tons of aftermarket accessories out there from many different sources, so you will need to shop around.

This.

And, better yet, do a search on this site for "skid plate", as there are many, many threads all over. Yes, you will have to read many threads & posts, but it will be worth it.

I always start out with what tools I will need for a breakdown away from help, then gradually go with what stuff I really need for specific trips.

First thing I got for my Wee was a top box, and put a Slime mini pump & repair kit, then made my own tool tube and put the typical tools I would need. I took out the stock tools, as they are junk.

Your skid plate dilemma...Weld 86 for beauty and light weight. The others are more stout, may require their crash bars, etc. Some of the serious bash plate are heavy as hell. By the time you get all farkeled out with premier stuff your light weight 650 weighs more the the BMW ADV bike!
