Interesting. I have the Vivitar blue one, paid $70 a couple years ago, works well, but not the same kind of video quality as you see with the GoPro.

If you put the camera inside the waterproof housing, you lose sound. I like the housing for protection, don't use it in wet conditions, so I have to drill a small hole on top for sound pickup.

For $38, I would use it on my bikes, and if it breaks or gets damaged, not as big of a deal as if it were the $300 kind.

Also, GoPro and another brand just released a new version where you can just allow your laptop to connect and download the pics via WiFi, which is a big convenience.

I have one of those. It records in standard AVI so it's not compressed but still depending on what size card you put in it you will run out of battery before you run out of space.

I don't remember if this is the emerson or the other cheap midland one I have which is lower quality. I know I have some videos that I never uploaded from the emerson

I know this video is from the midland
another video
this one and paid $25 for it

Contour Roam2 and +2 cameras.

Contour have been rescued from receivership and the Roam2 and the GPS version +2 are available again.

I've ordered one and will have it early next week, through a local retail shop, he has sold out of the Roam2 and I'm too cheap to spring for the GPS model for the amount of vids I'm likely to do.

I think they are the best "middle point" between a cheapie camera and the GoPro [and I really don't want a small box stuck on top of my helmet].

That is good news, I like my Contour.

The GoPro is also superb, but I didn't like the way it mounts as well.

I will probably get a GoPro as the "bike" camera, but will always use the Contour as the "helmet" camera

Amazon has the ROAM2 for $158.00. Reasonable. Would I need anything else? They also have this set of hookups and extended battery
Amazon.com: Wasabi Power Battery (2-Pack) and Charger for Contour 2350, 2450, 2900, C010410K and ContourHD, ContourGPS, Contour+, Contour+2: Camera & Photo

Would this be needed?

The Roam2 doesn't have a removable battery, so those won't be usable.

I have a love/hate relationship with my Roam2. When it works, it works great. Battery lasts for quite a while and a 32GB class 10 microSD card seems more than enough. I especially love the easy adjustability of the lens angle. Of course, if I turn it on and then off too quickly, it seems to freeze and not record anything (like my hour-long Autumn paramotor flight that ended with an emergency landing, for instance).
