Intercoms...what I've learned

Hi guys...ok, last thread of the morning...I have to get my butt to work or I'm going to get buried!

Since most of my riding is 2-up, I've wanted to find an intercom system that worked well enough to actually use between my passenger and myself. I looked at Tork, Chatterbox and even one that was a series or tubes that you spoke and heard through.

Anyway, I ended up buying one off of Ebay for $17 + shipping...$23 and change delivered...........BRAND NEW, in the BOX!

Initially, it worked well with the volumes turned up all the way up to 45mph or so and at that point, you no longer could make out what the other person was saying.

The ear peices stay in place no matter if my 9 year old daughter or my 37 y/o gf is wearing it and once you figure out where to place the inline mic....all is well!!

My GF and I played around with them yesterday and found that by turning the volume (each person has an individual volume control on the base black box) down to around 40%, we could CLEARLY hear the other up to speeds of 80mph!! Folks, we have a winner here!! I still would have rather have had a wireless but they are nearly 300 bucks and more then I'm willing to pay for an intercom. For 23 bucks, I couldn't have asked for more.

If you want one and can't find them on Ebay, let me know and I'll hook you up. If there is enough interest, we could probably setup a group buy and get them even cheaper........

I copied this from a previous post of mine. It might work well for this also. You can use it for intercom as well as rider to rider. They work well at speed also.

I have a few buddys at work I ride with and the wife from time to time. So I just needed a simple system. I bought a FRS/GMRS radio at Dick's Sporting goods that has a 5 Watt transmitter. About $60 for the charger, batts, Radio and headset. The headset is not designed for a bike, but Midland makes a closed face helmet head set with PTT. So for another $45 I got that. The PTT mounts to the handle bar with velcro, the mike and headphone mount to your helmet via Velcro and fit great. On high power I can easily reach 5 miles under normal circumstances, more if I were in South Dakota with no hills. I have found out a few things though.

Don't use VOX. It is too sensitive, even when adjusted. This is because once the mike is open it picks up any noise and holds it open. It also wastes battery. Set it to use PTT, and get on a good freq with a squelch code. Also turn on Roger Beeps, so people know when your done talking.

FRS is limited to only .5 watt, so it isn't good for much distance. I went with the GMRS range which can go as high as 50 Watts. BUT you really should get a FCC license for this. I don't think anyone checks though.

Which unit - name brand? The price is right - if nothing else to use while looking for the cheap bluetooth.

You get what you pay for. There are some really good systems out there. Some are good, some are bad, some are cheap and some are expensive. Most of the long distance riders use Autocom or starcom. I have one in my tank bag and use it for phone, music, intercom, and gps. Alot of riders use cb instead of gms radios. Some use both. do your research or you will be paying twice.

Midland

Used the Midland open face unit (with handlebar PTT) on my modular. $29.99 at Joes, $48 for two 18 mile Midland FRS/GMRS radios. Of course, the range is no where near that, but the rechargable battery last over 12 hours (2 days worth of riding and talking), can't hear crap after 75 mph, but am very happy with it for the money. My buddy bought the same. I take the batt out of one radio and leave the radio home. Two batteries and the included 12 v charger, I am set for any long trip.

I put the radio in my tank bag, route the wires through the MP-3 port. very clean looking set-up..when we dismount, simply unplug the helmet wire...good to go.

I think these were $39.99 online, but a local Joe's had them for $29.99. I don't think they are going to continue to carry them because other Joe's in the area don't have them.

We bought the Procomm unit for a trip to AU and NZ - had to send one back almost immediately as it was F'd right out of the box.

About day 6 of a 22 day MC trip downunder the proprietary power cable on my unit started going intermittant- failed completely at day 9. MONEY not well spent. It was pretty good when it was working.......but in retrospect I am not a fan of VOX, cross winds, etc set it off, just a PIA at times - but very handy at other times...(full face helmets too)

I think PTT would be better in the grand scheme of things.

I agree that most of the time, you get what you pay for and I'm not arguing whether you're right or wrong buying the item that you bought .............that's completely up to the buyer.

All I know for sure is the GF and I were out for a ride last night and we rode about 70 miles and we talked to eachother like we were laying in bed even at an indicated 85mph all for 23 bucks.

I'm sure that some of the other systems are much nicer and so they cost a lot more but from what I've read, they don't perform as well and certianly no better at speed. This cheapee does exactly what I wanted it to do and it does it on the cheap. It even has a jack for a MP3 player. I see it the same as buying a "to-from" car for 10grand....it will do most of the same things that my 40 grand SLK does....but at a hell of a discount. It comes down to where you want to put your money.....

For you guys looking, search under "HELMET INTERCOM SUZUKI GSXR 600 750 1100 HAYABUSA 1300 " on ebay motors....they listed it as a bike-specific accessory for some reason. I have no idea who the manufacturer is...some China or Korean cheapee. Let me know if you need help finding it.

I've talked to soo many riders about comm systems, the only riders that seem to by really satisfied with what they have are those that have Autocom systems.
I hear horror stories of riders that tried to cheap out, and after wasting $$$ ended up buying the Autocom

that's enuf for me to start with Autocom
