Berkshire Local Wanted

The NEVA 2014 will be in the Berks with camping at

Historic Valley Campground, in and run by North Adams, Ma City

I have my own list of places/roads but would look for some help for some local flavor and special places for the ride and maybe lunch etc.

If you are in North Adams then you have to ride up Rt 7 into Vermont. Get to Rt 9 and head East. (RT7 in VT is great all the way up) The view from the top of Hogback Mountain is awesome. You can then head down Rt5 which to me can be boring but it does lead to Rt 116 in South Deerfield. Hook a right on to 116 and take that out to Ashfield. This is one of the best twisty roads in Western Mass. I hear the Ashfield Lake House is a great place to stop and eat. 116 comes to an intersection with 112, take a right onto 122 and just before you get back to Rt2 take a right on North St. This will bring you down into Shelburne Falls, it's a nice spot for photos or if you like pizza Buckland Pizza is a great spot. From Shelburne Falls get back on Rt 2 and go West back towards North Adams. Again this section of Rt2 offers great views and sweeping curves also the notorious Rt2 hairpin. It's really not that bad of a turn as the speed limit there is 15 mph and there is a restaurant parking lot if you feel you need the runoff. It's a good ride that should take a few hours.

Another nice piece of riding is the Skyline Trail. One end is off Rt 8 in Hinsdale. It's recently been re-paved :thumb up: and takes you up over Middlefield and Chester and drops you in Huntington. From there, Rt. 112 north to Rt. 143 through Peru and back on to Rt. 8. This loop sees very little traffic as well.

I imagine you're planning on going up Greylock? Its worth the trip. Very twisty and also recently re-paved!

Thanks guys I am 'local' myself

Skyline is good but if I am down that way I would take River road its more
stromly

Ok

So far I am trying to link Zoar, Green River, 116, 8a, I am going to keep the ride under 250 miles We might be close enough to Willmington, VT for lunch

As these are all great heading North / up its interesting traffic free by ways make the day

I've already entered the campground into my GPS. I'l be going to Middlebury Vt. to visit my daughter from Ogunquit and then down rt. 22-22A, which is a nice road also btw, into North Adams.

Hey Rich, I'm not a local but ride a lot in the area. I'd be happy to send you some gps tracks of hundreds of miles of awesome and very rideable dirt roads, as wells as lots of paved twisties.

I'm also in if you want company doing some recon.

Rt 2 from 22 back east to North Adams is tastey

Though not as good as ever I might still run VT125 back to VT100 south then 8 into downtown N. Adams (vt7 sucks)

The point is always to give the attendees a tour with the benefits of local knowledge not available with local knowledge.

There is also the need for dirt, twisites, scenery and some easy cruising

Greylock as per usual will not be part of the ride so that they can make a run like Friday afternoon but at least its free except for parking

An interesting spot that might be good for a quick stop in that area is Tannery Falls in the Savoy state forest. It is a short walk to the top of the 80' falls from the parking area and a steep climb down to the bottom. The easiest way to get there is from Rt116 in Savoy to Loop Rd to Black Brook Rd (a very twisty road which connected Rt 116 to Rt 2, but last I knew the Rt2 end was still washed out) to Tannery Rd, Tannery is dirt and is smooth until the parking area for the Falls, it should all be ride-able on a Strom but get rougher the further into the SF you go, Balance Rock is also off tannery Rd. Following Tannery Rd will bring you to the main (dirt) road into Savoy SF, heading north will bring you to S. Country Rd, another maintained dirt road that will meet Rt 2 in Florida.

The roads you have listed are great roads, I never miss a chance to ride 8A from Rt116 to Rt 100

Checked out River Road and +Venture gloves.

Since i only live about 6 miles from the north end of River Rd. I decided to take it this morning. I took what I thought was River Rd. last year when I had my K100LT. I didn't follow it around to the left but went straight and ended up on a dirt road I had to pick my way through and was glad to find pavement again.

Anyway, yes, I concur River road is more Stromly. I've only had my Wee just a year (and 13k) now, and am still getting comfortable taking the road less traveled. :thumb up: Skyline is nice on a touring bike and there's days when I'd rather carve turns at 60 than anything else.

I love to take Rt. 2 from 22 over Ptersburg Pass and down onto Rt. 7 in Williamstown. When its clear, the view of the west flank of Mt. Greylock is spectacular. At that intersection, a quick right and left put you on to Green River Rd./Rt. 43. Is that the Green River you're referring to?

btw, it was 36 when I left home at 11 and 36 when I returned at 12:45. Got a chance to demo some +Venture battery heated gloves. With the OEM hand guards and my Gerbings vest, my hands did OK but I'm going to install heated grips for a little more heat help. By themselves, the Venture gloves wouldn't have cut it, but without them, my hands would have been cold even with the vest… I just don't want to get into 12V heated gloves and the hassle I think it would be getting on and off the bike with the wires. If I had to, I'd get a heated jacket instead and keep the blood warm right down to the wrists. But I'm not there yet…If I'd known the Venture gloves would perform as they have, I probably wouldn't buy them again. They just don't heat up enough or for long enough…and they don't sell a 12V. charger for them, which makes them useless on an extended trip.
My next farkle purchase will be Barkbuster Storms. I heard they offer better wind protection than the stock hand guards. I'm buying them mainly to help prevent lever breakage in the event of a tip over...
