SW moteck center stand

Hi, my name is Kevin And I bought a new 2012 Vstrom 650 Adventure a couple of weeks ago. I am going to order a SW moteck center stand through Twisted Throttle but have a question to ask everyone. They offer a spring tool for sale for the center stand, is this tool necessary or can I get by without it?

Basic tools only. Make sure you use some axle grease to lubricate the pivot shaft. Use my Motech centerstand daily. Best part is stability and maintenance. Usually lube my chain at the gas pump.

I had the dealer install centerstand before I would close the deal to buy it. It is essential for chain-lubing and other rear-wheel maintenance.

HOWEVER: For "stability", it is well known (basic physics) that 'Three points make a plane' Using the side-stand is FAR more stable. People who live in earthquake-prone areas are encouraged to use the side-stand to prevent tipovers during a geological event.

Technically using the "three points make a plane" makes my point (two feet on stand, front wheel). I do understand what you mean by leaning weight against a point, or "triangular stability". Without trying to start a physics debate I typically use the center stand when leaving my bike for the day. With my bike lowered, my "kickstand" doesn't allow much lean and appears less stable.

I found an old file without a handle and the narrow part which the handle fit onto was bent. It turned out to be the perfect tool. You want leverage and control for this install.

A simple way is to just use a piece of wire or cord with a knot/loop in one end and passed through a short piece of PVC pipe on the other for a handle. Then just use brute strength to stretch the spring. They're not all that strong; it's really just a matter of having a no-slip way of grabbing it.

After an episode working on my first V-Strom, I now keep an old shortened cam-type motorcycle tie down in my tool box and use it EVERY TIME I work on the bike with it on the center stand. Yes, a center stand is necessary and stable for working on the bike, but just be aware that just a small amount of rotational torque on a bolt in the wrong direction easily transfers enough torque to the bike to rotate it forward off the centerstand.

The time that happened to me, at least I was on the right side with my torque wrench and the bike (thankfully) fell to the left. But I ended up having to do some fiberglass patch work on those brittle and ridiculously expensive plastic fairing pieces.

Lesson learned, now whenever the bike is on the centerstand, I hook one end of the tiedown onto the cross-member of the stand, loop the other end through the front wheel and snug it down, so the centerstand can't flip up if the bike tries to roll forward.

I installed the SW Motech centerstand on my DL650A. I just used a long screwdriver to pry the springs on. Don't pay for the tool.
