What's the deal with cut/trimmed fairings.

I've searched the forum and Googled, can't find an answer.

I was at a BMW bike demo day/Octoberfest thing today. Adventure bikes were the theme, so naturally there were tons of VStroms parked. I noticed a bunch of Stroms with the lower part of the tank fairing cut off. Basically the black "fish gills" and part of the painted area.

Unfortunately, their respective owners were not around for me to ask "Why?" I had two thoughts;
1.) Something to do with the ever present wind buffeting on our bikes?
2.) My crash bars are very close to the black fish gill trim and at certain RPMs they will vibrate, maybe this mod was to cut down on the annoying vibes? Note, all the bikes with cut fairings had crash bars.

I honestly thought it looked half decent. The fairings on our bikes are huge so these looked a little more streamlined.

Work on the unpainted plastic under the headlights may be done to prevent aerodynamic lift at speed. As for work on the painted part, you've got me.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Ya, on 1000's there is a black plastic piece that almost looks like fish gills (not on the 650) that is mounted to the lower portion of the fairings. That piece and the lower part of the fairing were removed/trimmed.

See picture, area in red was removed/trimmed.

That could be cosmetic. It would make fairing removal as a unit easier.

crash damage

When I hit a deer, the bottom parts of the side fairings were broken where they attached to the radiator (along with a number of other bits). So I cut them off at an appropriate angle and made a couple of brackets to hold the lower edges of the fairings to the bike. I imagine any impact on the rad would damage the side fairings, to maybe that is it?

I'm still baffled by the fairings on these bikes. To me they 1) serve no practical purpose; 2) are easily damaged in a tipover; and 3) are chintzy looking (plastic has never been my favorite medium). If the dimensions of the gas tank are going to be extended by these appendages, why not increase the size of the gas tank itself, which would offer some real practical benefit?

I think this is one area where the design and/or marketing folks outvoted the engineers.
