Extended Warranty

OK I initally passed on the Extended warranty last month when I purchased my 07' DL650. Though I was pretty pleased with reasonable price of a 5 year extension. My question is who's got it, who's used it and who's been screwed by it (the infamous "that's not covered").

I love ridin' my "FREAK"!

DL650K7 Pearl Blue with OEM Centerstand, OEM top case/Luggage racks w/Nelson Rigg CL-850 Sb's
OEM Tank Cover, Back-Off Brake mod, Hot Grips, ProTaper KX high handlebars, 2 too many windscreens, DL1000 seat and Pat Walsh skid and guards ...why cant I stop ?!?!?!?!

On this: https://www.stromtrooper.com/forums/s...ended+warranty

and many other posts, the general consensus is that the extended warranty is not a good value.

My ONE warranty claim was for the little plastic caps at the top ends of the mirror stalks, which had cracked. In conversations with the dealer and Suzuki, I was told that these are not covered because it is a cosmetic issue.

So why would I want to extend this dissatisfaction with the warranty?

There is big profit margin on extended warranties and they ARE negotiable. Figure the dealer cost at 50% of retail. You should be able to get a healthy discount off MSRP if you haggle.

I bought an extra two years on my Kawasaki ZX-6R. They replaced a bad cam chain tensioner under extended warranty at my 15K service. Recently, the bike started dying after riding it for about 30-45 minutes. Symptoms pointed to something electrical that would freak out by heat. After a bit of work to figure out how to make it die for the dealer, I got a new ECU ($734 list) installed under extended warranty. That didn't solve the problem, so Kawasaki is having the dealer replace the wiring harness since they are having trouble reading anything from the (new) ECU. Also under extended warranty. I doubt that will fix it, but it may let them figure out what is wrong once their computer can talk to the ECU to get error codes or something. It sucks not having the bike, but at least it's not costing me anything to get it fixed.

So, like most forms of insurance, it seems like a waste of money until you need it. Given the cost of parts and labor ($60 - $80/hour), it doesn't take much of a warranty claim to make back several hundred dollars of warranty cost.
