Motorcycle Consumer News Comparison Test October Issue

Just received the October issue of MCN. Nice comparison test of the DL650, BMW F800GT and the N700X. I don't want to spoil it for anyone, but the lesson that comes out of the test is that a motorcycle may not be the best in all of the individual categories that are tested, but when those elements are pieced together, the sum is greater than its parts, especially when you factor in cost/value.

Overall: DL650 1st; F800GT 2nd; NC700X 3rd
"Based purely on the basis of on-road performance, the BMW would definitely come out on top. But when you factor for practicality and value, the equally quick and more affordable DL650 Adventure makes a stronger case in this comparison...Of these three, the DL650 offers the best combination of long-distance comfort together with excellent engine performance and overall value. and that makes it a winner here."

There's that P-word again - practicality

At the end of a long day in the saddle, that P-word is what you want to hear about........

But none of these bikes have enough horsepower, they are totally inadequate for even running errands.

Oh I am just being a wise ass, some believe that massive amounts of HP makes the motorcycle more exciting and useful for some reason. I grin ear to ear when I ride my 25 hp WR250R, but not a bike I want to be on the slab with.

How to put it kindly? I think I've pretty much lost a lot of respect for MCN on this one. Why not add a Piaggio scooter in the test?
Middleweight Sport tourers eh? Sport tourer is a poorly defined term at best anyway but the only one in the test that is close to the way I think of the term is the BMW. Suzuki calls the Vstrom a 'sport enduro tourer' ? Pretty frickin' funny.
Then of course you have to be amused how the BMW wins nearly every category but the Suzuki wins overall because of value? You either win or you don't.
Easily one of, if not the most meaningless comparison tests I have ever read.
Now if they had ran the 800GS (or 650GS), the Versys and The 800 Tiger it might have actually made some sense. Even throw in the Honda if they must.
