Bike help

I am trying to decide between 2 different bikes.

1. v-strom 650, 50,000km (30,000 miles i think). comes with a lot of accessories. "Loaded with extras like hard top and side bags, Large Madstad windscreen, New Gel Seat, Side Bars, Heated Grips, Port for heated Vest, Handebar Risers, 12Vaccessory etc" It's about 2 hours away and I have not looked at it yet.

2. v-strom 1000, 33,000km. comes with a hard tail bag and that's about it. tires are 6 years old, he says they have life left in them but I have my concerns. they have about 6,000km on them.

they are both basically the same price. the 1000 is local. the 650 comes with everything I'd want but it was a lot of miles. I've read that the v-strom is reliable.. is it reasonable to expect to get say 100,000km or more? I don't want to buy a bike that i'm only going to get a couple years out of before major repairs. I understand nothing is a guarntee.. but what bike would you guys go for? both look to be in fantastic condition. (v-stroms always seem to be)

Given that there's someone here with a vee with over 300k miles, I'de venture to say both bikes have relatively low mileage. What years are the bikes? And how are the maintenance records? Personally I'd go for the bike with better maintainance record and currently being ridden as opposed to one thats just being sitting in a garage.

My 04 has 50,000 and still runes great!
There are riders that say that they have 100,000 on there's.
There is one 1000 strom with a 300,000 mile rite up on it.
look for it on the search bar.

Mileage in and of itself isn't likely a concern on either of them. It comes down to condition and maintenance history in my mind. I question someone who thinks 6 year old tires are just fine. I guess they could be but they do harden with age and when hard they get very brittle and slick. If there is any evidence of cracking on the sidewalls or if they feel hard to a thumbnail then they're done in my book. Someone who doesn't know that might not be exactly my idea of a person who has good maintenance habits.

The motor on the V-strom 1000 will (statistically) last longer than the 650cc motor just by virtue of it's size, but as has already been mentioned it comes down to how they have been maintained. The V-strom 650's seem to be capable of building up some pretty serious mileage too, and have the added benefit of needing fewer, erm, "adjustments" in comparison to the 1000's.

I don't think motor longevity should be the deciding factor in your decision, as they are both quite different bikes that should give you the kind of engine life that you want.

Have a look at the https://www.stromtrooper.com/general-...ve-thread.html thread where you will find hundreds of conflicting opinions to help you out

Oh and if you get the 1000cc, change the tyres...

The 1000 is a 2002 and the 650 is a 2006

Here is what the 1000 owner said about tires/maintenance.. to preface he owned the bike for 6 years and claims to have only put about 6,000km on it in that time frame.

"they also did the service (oil changes, K&N filter, throttle body sync, etc). I have never had any issues with it whatsoever (except a dead battery after sitting for months). The bike had new tires installed when I got it and they are still in descent shape. I added a trunk from JC Whitney to make it a little more useful for me. It has a few minor scratches on it, but it certainly looks great for the year. It was never abused by me and really sat more than it was ever used. "

another big advantage of the 650 is that the insurance is 65 a month instead of 95 and it's better on gas.

50k is nothing...My 650 has 95000 and my 1000 has 72000 and they both run excellent.Vtoms old 650 has over 200,000 as well as at least one other (Rcacs maybe)
Only drawback of the 02 1k is windshield availability.Personally I prefer my 650 over my 1k but thats a personal decision.
I also agree with what other people have said ...its better for a bike to be ridden (and maintained) than sitting around...

They are DIFFERENT bikes with similar frames

A corrected Vee has Good power and will suffer for about 40 miles per US gal.

The WEE/GLEE is down 1/3 on power but I think gives a reliable 50 MPG

You seem to be frugal and want bags so the Wee should get a serious look. If your last bike was a superbike you might be disappointed with the power for a short time.

last bike was a ninja 500, which look at specs looks about dead even with a vstrom 650 in terms of performance.

Performance i'm not really worried about as long as it can cruise at 75mph i'm good.

I was more concerned with value of the 2 bikes. Insurance costs I will find out shortly. I am hoping to go look at the 1000 around lunch time today. I figure it's worth a look.
