Chain Questions

My chain is looking a little kinked. I'm thinking I should replace the chain only and leave the sprockets for next time. I would like to buy a chain, cut the old one off and install the new one without removing anything else from the bike. Not sure if I should replace the chain immediately. 17,500 miles on the original chain and sprockets. Any advice on how to proceed will be appreciated.

sprockets are cheap. For me, the rear sprocket always needs replaced when the chain does, but the front lasts for 2 chains.

Here's my advice- buy 2 new sprockets + the new chain, then compare the old sprockets to the new to determine whether to replace.

More advice- the job will go ALOT easier if you buy a chain with the right number of links- 112 IIRC. That way you don't have to bother removing links from the new chain.


edit- actually- looking at the pics- you are right, these sprockets look pretty good! Good news for you because the nut on the front sprocket is a bitch to remove.

I wonder about reported variations. Usually, the front sprocket and chain have about the same life and the rear sprocket double that. It would make sense given the front sprocket gets three revolutions for every one on the rear of a 650 as well as more pressure with a smaller front radius. I can't think of any reason the front would last longer than the rear unless the rear wasn't steel.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

good question GW- I dunno about other ppl but in my 56k miles I replaced the chain x3. The rear sprocket needed replaced every time but the front is usually pretty good.

Here is a pic of the last set of sprockets- the rear sprocket was TOAST! But the front still looks pretty good. Maybe it's a V vs Wee thing, or maybe it's just me...

I have had the same experience as Rashnak. Front lasts longer than rear. Both always steel and the last set from Blair at SV. My other bikes have been the reverse.

To the OP. If you want to cheat and leave the sprockets on just break the old chain and connect its end to the new one. Use old chain to pull new chain into engine cover and around front sprocket. Then rivet the new chain. very quick.

BUT, I would replace as a set, and take the time to clean the crap out of the counter sprocket area.

The sprockets are a bit rounded, but it seems they would last another 15 to 20 miles along with a new chain. The rear sprocket is in better shape than the front. I take it then I can purchase the correctly sized chain, use a clip link or something similar, and focus only on the removal of the old chain and the install of the new.

How about the condition of the chain? It seems ok and is still flexible, but less so then when new. I first noticed the kinking at 14,000 miles, just after I was rear ended by a car.

Rashnak, that rear looks like a saw blade. Frankentx, your front needs replacement for sure unless the picture is distorted, chain is toast. I would replace both sprockets and chain, Also it looks like it needs more lube intervals

You have some Xray vision. The teeth are still flat on the points and I do not see any hooking except for the angle of the picture of the counter sprocket. I would need to hold them to tell if its toast or not. They both look good to me from the photos. I might just lube the chain and motor on for a while.

Assuming that those rear sprockets were STEEL sprockets not aluminum then you run your chain WAY too loose

Also too loose chain also causes chain snatch and wheel hop

Your chain may be happy for a while with a good Kero cleaning and lube I saw only one link looking a little stiff

I always replace chain sprockets cush bearing at the same time

Frank, thrifty riders flip the sprockets over so the chain is working on the other side of the tooth. The rear needs to be shimmed out so the chain alignment stays the same.

Don't make more work for yourself by trying to oversimplify the job. Removing the front sprocket cover takes a couple of minutes. Cleaning out the crud and giving the clutch actuator a good look-over and a bit of lube is worth a few more minutes.
