Future Newbie Here - Got Questions

Hello my fellow riding friends, this is my first posting, but need some feedback as I am on the search......

Currently, I ride an Honda VTX 1800 Cruiser. It is a monster, but with my 6'5", 250 lb frame, I have no issues with this bike. Matter of fact, I love the stability that the weight brings and the power of a 110ci engine.

Lately, I find myself wondering further and further back into the mountains and I am regularly having to turn the big cruiser around is the blacktop ends and dirt begins. (You have to be crazy to ride a 1,000 lb cruiser on a dirt road for any distance.)

First of all, I have pretty much narrowed the search to a V-Strom. I like much about the bike and I really love the price, especially compared to a BMW.

So, to a few questions I have as I am investigating moving to a Dual Sport.

Is the price difference worth the expenditure to buy the extra 350cc's? Why do riders choose the 1000 over the 650 and willingly pay about $3k more?

What about riding 2-UP? My wife loves to ride, especially through the mountains, smelling the Pines. Can either the 650 or 1000 easily accomidate a second rider? How comfy is it for the second rider? Any comments about riding 2-Up are desired.

What about weight capacity? Between my wife and I....we go about 400. Then I would add side and rear bags.... What are your thoughts?

And honestly....any comments or help are greatly appreciated.

My experience isnt too great right now (I just picked up me wee-strom on sat but have been on the saddle more than off during my waking hours) Im about 5'11 205 and the wee has enough power for me with saddle bags and ive been keeping her under 5500. I havent been on a VTX1800 forever but im coming from a cbr1100 and not missing it too much with the 650. The main reason I switched to the wee was for city riding and its great at that.

If your planning more on just using this as a canyon carver with all the bags and a pillion id go for the 1000. The 650 can do it but you'll be shifting alot and since your coming from a 1800 v-twin im guessing that the 1000 will be a better fit.

Are you thinking of this as an addition or replacment to the VTX?

Hey jno, thanks for posting,welcome to stromtroopers.
This is just my opinion but as a rider on a 650, i can say that you will want the thou for riding 2 up loaded with gear. Not that the 650 won't very willingly do it, but it will be at a higher rpm that is less comfortable for the long haul. You can change the gearing but may be robbing peter to pay paul.
The 650 is a slightly better bike for the offroad so you may have to weigh out how much you will ride alone or want to go offroad as opposed to cruising 2 up.
Its kinda like, Well do i want the 4 cylinder or the 6? Power or economy?
At lower speeds, the 650 is a dream, on the highway not quite so much so.
I think the 650 may be a bit more reliable...\
At your size figure a taller seat and windscreen as you'll want them. Either way a great bike but i can't help but think the 1000 may suit you best. Course i'm not the one gotta pay for it. Good luck...J.R.

It will be a replacement for the VTX. I love that bike, but as I mentioned before, my wilderness spirit keeps pulling me up forest service roads.

I will admit that I would only be on maintained, dirt roads about 10% of the time.

If extensive 2 up or lots of superslab are in part of your normal riding then I would say the 1k, otherwise the 650 is a fantastic machine(so I hear). If not for my extensive time on the superslab commuting I would be on a 650 myself. That said I love my 1k. It isn't a touring rig, it isn't a sport bike, it most certainly isn't a cruiser. What it is, a fine basic motorcycle that handles pretty well, has decent power, and a very comfortable riding position.

The bike doesn't require a lot of expensive maintenance. It is pretty smooth, comfortable, and generally pretty fun to ride. Most of the quirks of the bike can be fixed with aftermarket parts such as windshield, and seat. And if your easy on it the bike will deliver great fuel economy to boot. All that from a pretty affordable bike. Kinda hard to believe really when you go out and look at the other bikes on the market and compare the basic competency of the bike. The other stuff that you will want can be added, if the basics are right to begin with.

So if you need the extra ability of the 1k then yes it is worth spending the extra cash. If you compare the cost of the 1k to other bikes in it's class I think you will be surprised. Cost wise you really cannot compare the 650 to the 1k, but if you compare apples to apples I think you will find that the 1k is a good value. If you are looking for more than a good basic bike, then you should be prepared to add those abilities to this bike, or just pony up the cash to get another bike that is equipped with the toys you might be looking for. Good luck with your bike search. The Vstrom is a good bike as many hear can attest.

With the Vee, you get 30 more hp, plus at highway speeds you are riding at lower RPMs with lots of overdrive available. I also like the balanced look of the dual exhausts. The stock seat is taller than the Wee's.

The down side is the Vee is noisier and vibrates more. It weighs 40lbs more and uses more gas.

Personally I am happy with my Vee and I love the extra hp. If you get the Vee, make sure the dealer tunes up the FI mapping properly. I would also rec'd changing the front sprocket to 16t and possibly add a TFI power management box.

I do plenty of Highway miles and have more than my share two up with the 3 cases loaded. Never had any issues with the Wee not having enough power :rolleyes: Current owner of my 05 Strom travels two up often and their combined weight is at least 350lbs, comming from a V-Max he isn't complaining about a lack of power either :rolleyes: Hell I chased him, two up, over 60 miles of gravel road and didn't have the skills to keep up with him

Big John,

I came from an '03 Meanstreak that had all of the good performance mods. Did I like the bike? Yes it was cool, but my 6'4" 260 pound frame did not like riding for very long. It finally came time to replace tires and instead I bought a new Vee. I had been looking at this bike from the beginning and after owning one for a thousand miles I wish I had just started with this one and had a year of payments under my belt. I finally have a bike that sits very comfortably for me. With you saying that you are on an 1800 I think that a Vee would be a good transition for power and riding 2 up. The Wee was tempting at the price but I am glad I ponied up some more money for more bike. I would never do any crazy offroading on the 1000, but dirt roads don't scare me much. So for right now I would definately spend the extra cash for the 1000 again.

the smaller 650 seems too be happy when pulling extra weight, sounds great going up a hill with a load on the motor
