I can't make up my mind...

I know the 650 vs 1000 has been beat to death, I've read about all of them. I feel confident that I would be happy with the 650, but I don't know if the drawbacks of the 1000 are as big of a drawback for me. I will be riding 2-up on occasion, very few long trips, probably only 3000-4000 miles per year so MPG isn't that big of a deal. But I can't help the thought of "if 650 is good, 1000 would be great".

Besides...2 exhaust pipes.

Gonna have to make up my mind soon...I am planning on making a trip to the dealer this week.

Test ride both and stop beating the dead horse even more.

Proper motorcycle training is like wearing a helmet. You can ride for 30 years without one and make a case that you've never needed it. Until you do but then it's too late to make that decision.

Same frame, geometry, etc. = same ergos. If you like the way one sits, you'll like the way they both sit.

Different engines = different bikes. The 1000 is not just a more powerful 650 - believe me, I wish it were. It has a different character.

I did test ride both and its a BIG night and day difference between the 650 and 1000. To me the 1000 is totally different bike than the 650, the feel, the power, the handling, the 1000 is much s-m-o-o-t-h-e-r, its like when riding the 1000 it feels like ur doing 40 mph but when you look at the speedometer ur doing 75 mph, but the 650 seems to struggle at high speeds, or you really know ur going at a high speed.
The engine on the 1000 sounds better, it has that electric motor sound where the 650 engine sounds loose like there's a couple of nuts and bolts rattling around inside the engine crankcase.

That's just my opinion,,, please don't beat me up!

OK,

I'll make it up for you: Get the 650. You aren't doing long trips, 3-4,000 miles a year and only occasional 2-up. I presume you'll be riding a lot of back-roads. You don't need the 1000. In fact, you shouldn't even buy a new one if you really are going to ride this little. Save your money and buy a used DL650 and enjoy the twisties. Be forewarned though. Once you get it, your stated riding goals may change.

Don't buy a new 1000 now. The all new 2014 1000 has the opportunity to be a better bike in many ways.

"Older people who are reasonable, good-tempered, and gracious will bear aging well. Those who are mean-spirited and irritable will be unhappy at every period of their lives.

"Let each of use properly whatever strengths he has and strive to use them well. If he does this, he will never find himself lacking."
