Dealer Attitudes

I was in the local multi-brand dealership this weak to look at helmets. While there I wanted to take another look at the V-Stroms. It is a pretty large dealership that sells Suzuki, Yamaha, and Kawasaki. There had quite a few bikes, but look as I might, I could not find a V-Strom. So, I found a salesman and asked if they didn't have a V-Strom in stock. He impatiently told me they did not and that it was a niche bike so they did not keep one on hand. He said they could get one if someone wanted one. He said this as he was walking away, apparently convinced I did not want one. The truth is, I was not in the market to buy one that day, but I was still suprised by he lack of interest in the V-Strom or of having me as a customer. I have also been looking at the Buell Ulysses and in spite of the fact that they are sold through Harly dealers that generally cater to a much different market all three HD dealers I have been to in the last few weeks had at least one Uly in stock and had salesmen who were knowledgeable about the bike and interested in selling me one. Two of them offered me a test ride on the spot. For you guys who have V-Stroms, did the dealer have them in stock? Is my local dealership typical? Just wondering.

My dealer had one of each (100 & 650) but were equally uninterested in them. They were pushed to the farthest corner away from the entrance. Which meant I got a deal.

What I've come to notice is that a large majority of riders want a certain kind of bike. Either a cruiser, a sportbike, or a dirt bike. They would rather have a bike that does one thing great instead of doing everything good. This is why the dealers don't carry Stroms on a regular basis.

When I got mine, one dealer wouldn't talk to me and another one tried to sell me a different bike(a Katana). The last dealer I went to one of the salesman had ridden one before and understood why I wanted it, and got me a decent deal.

Pretty much the same here. On the back wall, AFTER, the used bikes. Got a good deal and a great # for my trade.

Purchased my 07 650 in March 07 the local dealership had one in stock. The salesman was very helpful. I did not buy the bike from them they would not come down on the price. There are two other dealerships within 50 miles that did not have any V Strom in stock. I traveled 110 miles to a dealership in Ohio and purchased the bike. Saved 900 dollars. They had three new and two used in stock and were very helpful.

The dealership I buy from is in Maumee Ohio, they almost always have one of both on the floor and more in crates. Their prices are also good, very friendly sales staff.

Dealer I bought from had their 'Stroms right up front. Two(!) 650 ABS models on the floor, another in the "back building", and one non-ABS and two 1000's. Said they sell so well they can hardly keep them in stock. Other dealers had at most one 650 or one 1000. All others said they "could maybe get an ABS" if I really wanted one, but it might take a while. Guess who I bought my ABS from???

Troy City Garage, Troy NY................I drove three hours each way to pick my 07 ABS up. Paid $6619 out the door.........All way done over the internet. No BS, No song and dance when I went to PU the bike.........Amazing easy transaction. Even took a personal check without asking questions........I'll buy from them again.

All my local dealers either didn't have a clue about the ABS model ("What color are you looking for?"), didn't have one in stock ("We can order one....") or were asking $7200+.................Bunch of idiots!

All 3 dealers in my area had multiple Stroms on the floor right at the front door in prime position. Two of them had ABS models among them. I bought from the large multi line dealer. My salesman suggested the Wee as he is an enthusiastic owner and even offered to trade me his heavily farkled model for the ABS version I was buying. This is a very large volume dealership and they claimed that they were only allotted 2 ABS Wees for the entire year of which I got the last one.
In any case, each of the 3 dealers suggested the Wee immediatly after I described what I wanted in a bike.
