Man! I Must Taste Good!

Because of the beautiful riding weather, I took a 90 minute "detour" on the way home yesterday through some gorgeous wooded country. When I was about 5 minutes from home, I thought I felt something crawling in the upper sleeve of my jacket. Because of the temperature, I was only wearing a t-shirt underneath; I usually wear something long-sleeved.

All of a sudden, I was stung/bit on my upper arm. I began hitting my arm to kill whatever it was. It then went right down to my forearm and immediately got me twice more. Hurt like hell! I was cussing and bouncing on my bike until I found a place to pull over. I took off my jacket and turned the sleeve inside out, but couldn't find a thing. Whatever it was must have flown away.

Today, I have three large welted areas on my arm. Here's one picture of my forearm, but it doesn't do it justice. I can only speculate what the culprit was. Shoulda stuck to long sleeves. The bastard....

Talking

I had a bee hit me right in the neck this past Saturday just as I was leaned in pretty good on a curve on Emery Pass here in southern New Mexico. I ALWAYS wear a bandana, except for Saturday. I didn't pay attention to missing the bandana until I was about a mile from my house on the way out. That'll teach me to be too lazy to turn around for a piece of "minor"gear.

Glad you're OK

Lucky you got it stopped upright. I've had this happen twice, once with a hornet a few years ago that landed and crawled in my sleeve while the jacket was off. I always thought hornets stung once and died - wrong.

First time was 1978 - I think two bees hit my throat while I was doing about 75 mph on a jaunt to Montreal. Stayed upright but had tears in my eyes from the pain. Pulled off at a service centre and a woman doctor who was there with her husband on vacation saw the welts and insisted she check me out before she'd let me ride. Ended up fine but had a bad swelling in throat and could hardly talk for a week from the bruise. That's the last time I ever wore an open face helmet..

Glad you made it ok.

Garage
I had a butterfly almost take me out 3 years ago. Cruising down the road at about 65 and it hit me right on the side of my throat. Luckily, the tears that welled up weren't enough that I couldn't see. Pulled into a gas station about 2 miles later, had a wing still stuck to my neck and a welt that looked like someone slide their finger under my neck.

That was an interesting story... "what happened to your neck, that looks awful"... "err, well, you see... there was this butterfly... ... "

Glad you made it.

Did I tell you about the pigeon that flew into my helmet?

One of the reasons I (nearly) always wear a light neck tube is because I'm allergic to wasp and bee stings - anaphalactic shock at 70 doesn't bear thinking about!
