I finally have a Strom!

I was very near to buying a 2007 DL650, just waiting to sell my DR650 first. But then I found a 2005 DL1000 for sale on craigslist with only 1400 miles on it. After riding it for about 20 minutes, I went for it. I'm picking it up tomorrow.

Granted, I was sold on the wee, but when I had the opportunity to get a vee for less it was a no-brainer.

There is an extremely slight hiccup at 2750rpms, but its hardly noticable. I will have to come up with some sort of solution for the buffeting, at around 55mph and up it vibrates my head. Other than that I love it, I can't wait to start commuting with it and put some miles on it.

Anyone in the Portland OR area looking to buy a DR650?

Welcome Rick - you'll find a pretty active Portland contingent in the Northwest regional section. Hope the dl1k treats you great!

Buffeting? Is that something you do while lined up with a gaggle of other folks while filling your plate with food?

Seriously though, there are almost as many "fixes" for this condition then there are for curing hiccups!

When I bought my DL1000K6, I traded in a ZRX1200. I also ride a KLR650, so I know what wind is all about. The Strom was pretty tame to me, but I tried making it even better. I have a Laminar Touring Lip on the bike. I've also done the "15 mm tiltback" mod that is described here (you've got to do some searching to find more information) that is basically replacing the bottom bolts on the windshield mount and putting some 15 mm rubber spacers under the windshield mount to tilt the windshield back.

My Strom has this done and I also have a set of Aerostitch tank panniers on the bike. It is very nice when riding the bike in just about all conditions. I've got to try an idea I have to make it even better. More to follow.

There is also a very easy, sure-fire fix for the 2750 rpm hiccup. Keep the engine above that rpm band!

I just switched my bike over to 16 / 43 gearing and it really wakes up the beast within. I'm extremely satisfied with the results. When I go long distance touring on the superslab, I'll simply put the 17 tooth front sprocket back on. A very rare occurence with me, so the bike is just about perfect now!
