I did overseas, thru the military, but by private shipper. I see you're actually coming from the same place I was.
TMO ships your bike via household goods, thy add it in as part of your total weight. It's usually put in an open crate and shipped like cargo. I had no problems with them shipping my dirt bike. It must be dry though I believe. Ask TMO at your base, they know what will be done, it's been done there before I'm sure.
I used Uship.com to find a shipper who provided door to door enclosed service from Portland, OR to SoCal for under $300. Neither I nor the seller had to lift a finger. You didn't mention if it was in the US or overseas but I'm sure there are shippers on there who handle that too.
My Dad had my bike crated by a dealer in Maryland and shipped by Pacific Interstate Express (PIE) to March AFB in Ca. The base receiving signed for it and I put it together on the loading dock with only the factory tool kit. Had to push it across the base to the barracks as it had no gas or oil. After servicing it fired right up the next day. Took 12 days coast to coast.
With cost of fuel, wear and tear and motels & meals.....shipping IS cheaper than fly & ride...............Mike
I was at the local indie shop one day when the truck for an actual motorcycle transport company pulled in and delivered a bike for a customer (sorry, don't remember the name). It was good, competent service.
I just read some of the complaints and Uship's rebuttal. The say that "all they are is a website service" and don't have any control or even screening process for the shippers that use them. I'd be pretty damn leery and do a lot of pre-screening and insurance getting from a 3rd. party.
