Why is quantity of posts important?

So, I mostly lurk. I have no interest in yammering and making inane comments in order to give myself a high rank on a forum like this. I read what people post and only comment when I feel that I have something constructive, or polite, to contribute.

But I only have 5 posts and I'm not cool enough to sell anything if I haven't made 20 posts...

20 post minimum required to be able to post a "for sale" advert.

No one ever bothers to take note of the "read first post" in that section of ANY forum.

Then they wonder why are being "denied the right" to post, subsequently starting a thread like this one.

We all then start to reply to it.

If the OP replies to each of the posts individually with comment such as "thanks", or "I didn't know that", or "I'm going to make about 14 more useless posts", then he will soon have the required 20 post minimum.

I agree with the minimum, but can also understand why most people never read the "read first post" post in the "for sale" section as well.

Cabenth, do you have anything you would like to comment on regarding my perspective on the topic?

Oh, and can you all guess I'm bored so killing time posting this while having to work on a glorious sunny Sunday instead of being off on a ride?

The rule is in place to prevent people from joining the forum simply to post something in the "for sale" forum. It's a valid rule and if you think about it real hard I'm sure you'll realize it's sensible. It has nothing to do with who's cool and who's not. It's about keeping spammers out of the forums.

Post padding is against the rules. Keep posts topical, not useless.Fluff posts will be deleted and the poster may even be banned. If I am going to send money to somebody, I want to have some feel of the person I'm sending it to. That's one reason the rule is there.

And that is a good rule too GW.

To be honest, it would only take 30 minutes to an hour of surfing through this great forum to find enough topics where even a newbie to the forum could make valid, and even useful, comments to threads others have started or commented in.

We already have enough spammers posting in this forum with bogus posts and dodgy website links, I'm always happy to flag them to the Moderators because action is taken very quickly to remove and block them.

As far as I know a new member can send a PM to anyone on the forum without having to comply with the post count [GW can probably confirm/refute this].

And via PM is the way anyone should contact a member selling something on the forum, within the "for sale" thread is not generally the place to ask questions or make an offer on an item for sale.

Though I'm sure there are exceptions when posting the question direct in the thread is appropriate at times.

PM can be used to reply to a sale thread. The site works by people giving and receiving information. Wanting to post a for sale thread after a long membership and complaining about the more than 20 posts rule is an example of taking, taking, taking and then complaining of an inability to take some more. If people don't give of their knowledge, opinions or even friendly banter, the site couldn't exist. Just welcoming new members will probably get the post quota in a week. Paying $20 is another way to put something into the cycle of giving and receiving.

summation

By doing what GW suggests we are the sum of all our knowledge, not a bad outcome - it got us to the moon.

^^^^ but yet you just did. Your ability to sit back and quietly read this great site is admirable, but to complain about the yammering and inane comments with your own version is a bit smug.

No one should complain about the 20 post rule. This is a forum, not a flea market. If a person wants to sell or even buy, there are other outlets such as CL or eBay. Nevertheless, members in good standing do have the privilege of using the classifieds. So no one is being prevented from selling stuff when CL and eBay are readily available. It's worth noting they have rules and procedures as well.

Hey, this subject is very timely for me because I have something to sell. I have been a member since last May, and obviously don't post too often. But I bet I have been on this site a couple hundred times and have found tons of useful info.

And as soon as I hit the submit button, I'll be able to post to the for sale forum. Cool!

not sure i agree with the 20 post minimum. many very useful non-spam-filled forums allow newbies to sell in post 1. doesn't seem to adversely affect the quality of those forums.

exercising my right to opine here, i just think that as good as this forum is, the rules are a bit ridiculous. but i've said that before and aint nothin gonna change. so i deal with it and continue to enjoy...

I am a low count member who last night could not post a reply for an item for sale, it was a little frustrating on the buy side, but a PM took care of it.

I appreciate the efforts of the more knowledgeable folks on this forum, and if I take enough time to search, I always find my answer. It is hard for me, a relative newbie, to contribute anything worthy to this site that is not already here... but I'll try!
