So I was on the freeway in Cali going towards Riverside for a long trip up the Pacific Coast Highway... And I ran into some large debris going about 70mph. Due to the car in front of me, I had no time to swerve out of the way. The picture is attached as to what the damage looks like. I am paying about $200 to have the rim sent to a specialist to get it unbent (a new rim was on backorder... And I'm not from this area, so I couldn't wait for it). I will keep you updated with more pics to follow to see how the unbending process went.
I see you seem to have it out for work already. David Moore in Hesperia 760 240-4590, did rims for me before. He made a rim Dr. John in Orange had worked on even better. For less $.
Good luck with that.
On a slightly related topic, about 15 years ago my neighbour was killed after a very similar event.
In his case he lost control of his Wing after running over the debris and was hit by another motorcycle as he rolled onto the ground.
Looking at the damage your photo, I'd say you must be a darn good rider. I'm not sure I'd be walking away from that one.
Good luck with the repairs.
I damaged a front rim on my goldwing due to hitting a big rock in the road a year or so ago. Although, I did not see it for the truck in front of me, if I had not been following too close waiting for a chance to pass I could have easily avoided it. Just saying.:yesnod:
That rim should be easy to repair. I have had the front rim on our '04 Wee fixed two times in the last year and a half. Both times its damage looked a lot worse and the rim came back perfect. Cost for this in Houston is $150 which includes a complete refinish of the wheel.
I have hit smaller objects in the past as they suddenly appeared from under the vehicle ahead and now I always ride in either wheel track for that very reason.
Your lucky ( or skilled) you didn't go down. ..... and you missed the front wheel, very lucky!
Yesterday afternoon I read this thread and was thinking about it on my commute home. I realized I've gotten a little bit lax again (& more aggressive & impatient lately) . I realized I was following quite close.
thank you for the reminder to chill out. Good luck getting your bike going again .

I have been logging about 500 miles a week in motorcyle commuting on Los Angeles freeways for many months now. In fact, I already have 20K miles on my DL650 and only bought her new in July of last year. 10 months of riding, most of which are on these crappy Los Angeles freeways. If there is one thing I have learned in those short 10 months it's been that you never follow another vehicle too closely behind. I have seen ladders, lumber, pallets, mattresses, all kinds of chunky metallic looking stuff, and to cap it off, on Monday of this week, an upright Ikea living room chair! When I had my first tire change I was only going to change the rear tire until the dealership called and informed me that I had a BOLT embedded in my front tire! So I had to cough up the dough to replace both tires which are now Michelin Pilot Road III's .
The debris seems to stem from a combination of those who don't know how to tie things to their car or construction workers who don't know how (or are too lazy) to anchor anything properly to a pick-up truck. Additionally, I have a miserable history of getting stuck behind concrete trucks that are spewing concrete out the back and I even got stuck behind a pick-up truck of painters in the carpool lane who hadn't cleaned their spraying rig before loading it into the back of their truck so guess what I got to clean up when I got home..........
Stay back, stay alert, & stay alive.
