hey guys, for those of you that have applied a fender extender (i got mine from murph's) without using the screws, what did you use to install/apply and what did you use that maybe didn't work??

thanks ahead of time.

Just put fenda extenda on my 09 wee. Used double sided tape (3M VHB) I am sure it is on very well but I think I would use ABS adhesive if I had to do it again.
There is an inherent small gap around the border of the extenda due to the thickness of the tape. I filled this void with a little black silicone. Dont get me wrong the resuslts are very good and it took about 5 minutes to do but I think if you are neat with the adhesive you would get a slightly more professional result with the adhesive.

I did the same. It's a totally dry application with the tape where the cement can get messy. The silicone can be applied and the excess wiped off. I also put a bead of silicone across the top to keep water out of the taped area.

I used Oatey PVC/CPVC primer (very sparingly, it's really runny sh..) and the Oatey PVC/CPVC cement. I did several dry runs on how and what I was going to do. I couldn't get any of my clamps in there to hold it (tire was still on) so I held it firmly in place by hand making sure it made good contact between the two surfaces. I used heavy duty paper towels to keep from gluing my hands to the fender. I held in place for several minutes and then packed the area where the extender, the fender, and the tire met full of old rags. I packed them in really tight and then left it overnight.

It has held since 2006.

Screw that (literally)! Instead of messing around with glue and chemicals, I just used the self tapping screws. Made sure to take the fender off and hammer flat the pointy bits. 2nd bike I've done that on.

A polyurethane adhesive is what the Fenda Extenza company advises. That is what I used. So far no issues. As for the roughing/sanding part I gave it a good rough sanding (both the inner fender & the ext part of the Fenda).

I saw images where the four screws were used but didn't like the look.

As a purveyor of said Fenda Extenda, I have sold literally thousands of them. I am not a fan of the glues and cements that bond the Extenda to your fender. At some point you may break one either while riding or trailering. If that happens it is a nightmare getting what is left off of your stock fender leaving a suitable surface to mount another.

With that being said, I don't like the self tapping screws they come with. So...here is what I do...

Clean underside of fender with rubbing alcohol. Attach extenda using supplied double side tape. Drill three holes through both and use small black automotive type interior push fasteners. Push in the fasteners and you are done. The head matches the texture of the extenda, will not rust and easy to remove if necessary.

35K on my Concours, 92K on my Goldwing, 36K on my FJR, 10K on my Sportster and 16K on the V Strom and all good.

I used 3M Super Strength Molding Tape purchased at Wal-Mart for $ 5. I had read elsewhere on the Net that this is a variant of the 3 M VHB tape.

This worked for me too. The extra strength plus filling the entire mating area with better tape does the trick. I also sealed the perimeter with black silicone to prevent dirty water from getting in the interface and running down the back of the extender.

I used pop rivets on mine. When I hit a tire snake in the road it split my front fender and pulled out two of the rivets without damaging the extender. After that I glued it all back together with ABS cement. I'd rather lose the extender than damage the fender; so on the next bike I'll use the tape!

Ugh...because I never read this thread I spent hours of frustration adding my fenda extenda this morning. Thankfully, I had a set of needle nose vice grips that were just long enough to help. For some reason try went back together much easier than it was to get them out. I really don't understand Suzuki's thought process on this one.

I installed my fender extender with the fender in place. The fender is flexible enough so you can easily clean the mating surfaces using a few alcohol swabs. I use some silicone adhesive to supplement the 3M mounting tape that comes with most fender extenders. Here is where I get creative. After I stick the extender onto the stock fender I take a ball of tightly packed newspaper and shove it between the fender extender and the tire. Then roll the bike forward and it will pull the paper ball up and against the mating surfaces nice and tight. Easier to do than explain. Just leave it alone overnight so the silicone can set up. Then roll the bike backwards to remove the paper ball. If some of the paper sticks to silicone that was squeezed out then you know it was done right. I also wrap the job up with 3 stainless steel sheet metal screws along the bottom of the fender. Have done this for every extender I have installed. Haven't lost one yet.

I just installed my Fenda Extenda. I went the cement route, too.

I cleaned the inside of the fender, then roughed up the surface with a file, also filed the surface of the fenda extenda that would bond with the factory fender. I used Oatey ABS cement to glue it, stuffed 2 shop rags under the fender to keep pressure on it while the cement set up. The cement was black in color, which means any slight amount of glue that pushed out at the seams was the same color as the plastic fender and the extender.

In 30 minutes, it was solid as a rock.

NewtoStrom:

Great suggestions! Would you mind posting a pic of your fender extender including the three sheet metal screws? It'd be appreciated!

Cheers!

E-6000

The forward bolts on my SWM skid plate gouged out the plastic in the front fender during some deep pot hole riding in Mt. Rainier so I had to remove the fender and cut off about 1.5 in of the back of the fender. Scrubbed and cleaned and then bonded the Fenda Extenda to the fender with E-6000, clamped and left it in the house for 48 hrs or so and then installed. The glue came out around all the edges so no water gets in. It has taken some good hits with rocks and is just fine.
