130 Bikes . . . and only one V-Strom

Yesterday, near my home in Maryland, I participated in a 50 mile charity ride for teenagers with substance abuse problems. It cost $25 and the ride ended at a lake in Pennsylvania where there was a really nice lunch.

The ride left from a "biker bar/restaurant" type of place. When I arrived there were almost 130 bikes in the parking lot. My 09 V-Strom 650 was the only V-Strom in the entire pack. (There was one KTM, but no other dual sports or adventure type bikes.)

If you want to watch 130 bikes leave the bar, heres the youtube link: (I pull out at 1:28, the whole video is one minute and 41 seconds)

I went to a HD demo days today. It was drizzling slightly, but no big deal. I pulled into the parking lot and I was the only bike there. The parking lot was full of cars and all these HD riders standing around waiting for the roads to dry. No way the dealer was going to let the Demo days start when the roads were wet.

Was funny in a sad kind of way.

Selective coolness.

Most charity rides are almost all HD around here.

Harleys and wet roads

I did a ride earlier this year with a friend who owns a Dyna Glide. (RR is RR section "Gold in them there hills" ) We hit rain coming into Cairns along the Capt. Cook Hwy. His bike was sliding all over the place on its massive rubber,:yikes: my Wee wearing Mitas e07s didn't misbehave at all.:yesnod: The dealer probably knew what he was doing by not putting the wind up potential buyers.:green_lol:

Those types of rides generally draw the "Stereotypical biker" groups. I.E. cruisers and sport bikes. It's just a big social event for them.

The CMA chapter I am part of helped with a biker blessing at the Decatur HD dealer. 963 bikes went thru and I only saw 1 VStrom, 1 KTM, a couple Triumph's, maybe 25 goldwings but of course the great majority were Harley's

vstrom

We have population of 90,000 and vstroms everywhere. Our small riding group of 12 we have 4 vstroms and one rider looking for a strom. See at least a couple on road every day. I do think out terrain promotes this type of bike as we also have lots of duel sport bikes.

It is interesting. For years the only Vstom on the road around here has been mine. Suddenly our local dealer has 4 of them on his showroom floor. He tells me that ADV bikes are all the rage now and he is selling them like no tomorrow. Guess I will be one of many now.

I used to live and work along the highway in northern Canada most used for travel to the Yukon and Alaska. Come summer I'd see at least 20 bikes on just regular commute. If I spent time out on a patio near the highway I'd spot 100+ over the course of a pint.

The vast majority were BMW's followed by HD's, then a smattering of enduros of all types. There were also some Hondas (mostly Varaderos), KTMs, Yamahas and the odd Victory cruising through.

It was a rare and exciting moment when I'd spot a V-Strom.

If you're ever cruising through western Canada and come across a rider in white atop a black wee waving ecstatically at you then it's probably me in my excitement at actually having wave #362 going to another strom and not another BMW or HD (those guys don't seem to wave back as often :( )
