Rust

Don't know what it's called but it looks like a nut or cap of some kind. It's located on the underside of the handlebars where they come together with the forks... Hell I might be describing it all wrong. All I know is when I look at underside of the handlebars near the radiator I can see it and its rusted. When I took my bike in for first service I mentioned it and they said it was ok. Now I don't know because it looks even more rusted since then. Kind of pissed off... Would WD-40 help? I can post a pic later if that would help.

Post a pic. Any oil on it will help slow it. WD40 doesn't last long. Gun oil would probably be better.

Cleaning it off and repainting it is best.

Where do you store it? if outside you can expect rust. Just the way it is. Ride it in the rain same thing but less than if its sitting wet for a long time.

I look my bikes over on occasion but surface rust on bolt heads etc doesn't worry me to much.

But post a pic so we can see what your seeing.

That's the steering stem. It isn't made of stainless steel because it carries a high load and isn't visible under normal circumstances. It isn't a problem other than cosmetic.

You must have had some time on your hands to go searching the bike to find that.
It's normal. Lots of bikes for the last 100 years have had some rust on the steering stem.
You could clean it with steel wool and oil and coat it with a bit of grease but that would attract more dirt.

I've come to dislike steel wool. Tiny particles break off and promote rust. Scotch Brite pads are one alternative.

LOL you got me curious so I looked at mine...:yikes:

At least you can still see un-rusted sections on yours:green_lol:...mines all rust... For what is going on there I wouldn't be concerned to much. You could take it all apart clean it up and 6 months from now have a bunch of rust on it again.
