I guess I'm the FNG since I just picked up a 2003 DL1000...:hurray:. It already has SW Mototech crash bars and Givi bags, so I don't anticipate adding any major farkles right away, but the windshield is in less than perfect shape. Any suggestions for a windshield for an '03 would be appreciated. If there is any maintenance items I should look at (17,000 mi), let me know. It is a mostly stock and unmolested bike. Thanks & glad to be here.
I don't yet have one of these so don't take this as an endorsement or a product review, but this is what I plan on buying when I replace my windshield.
I was really impressed when I read about their design process, and their attention to detail (like their explanation about materials used, and philosophies behind them.)
Also just a great all around site for V-Strom information, although many links are dead/stale.
Oh yeah, and congratulations! Also, you don't look like the FNG based on your "join date." Even though you appear to have been on the site longer than me, welcome!
I don't have any other points of comparison, but find the CalSci to be a nice improvement over stock. It's also a very bright and clear material that cleans up sharp and can be polished - no coatings.
Since you've got an 03, I can vouch for the 'new' Madstad made for gen 1 Vees. I put one on my 02 back in December and it works great. Ordered it with a 20 screen that I had to exchange for a 22. Customer service was excellent. Btw, I'm about 6'1", and have a Seat Concepts saddle. For me,Biggest issue is getting used to that much wind protection and little noise or buffeting.
It looks like the Madstad is the way to go for an '03. I like the CalSci products (had one on a C14), but they don't make one for an '03. As far as the join date, I did join awhile ago to research Vstroms before purchasing one, but I wound up with a Kawasaki C14 instead. This DL1000 was a good deal and it will give me the ability to explore some of the dirt roads here. Thanks for all the help!
I have an 03 v as well. I second the madstad for the 02-03 strom. I could have saved a lot of money getting it first of course they werent available back then. you may also need a power commander to correct 3500-4500 rpm studder also if you get clutch chudder real shelby is the answer. I still have a couple of cee bailey shields in the garage one is 26" cant remember the other 24" I think. If interested let me know.
