Aftermarket exhaust

Hi guys.

Probably a stupid question but that's how you learn, right?

I bought my Strom this February and it came with lots of good farkles already on it. One was one that I probably wouldn't have done but I really do like it. A Scorpion Slip on carbon fiber exhaust. Love the sound. Nice rumble compared to Dad's 2012. But my question is does this affect the performance of the motor? I have seen people add some performance module to thier bikes when changing exhaust. Is this something I need to do? The bike seems to run great. I'm not sure on the mileage yet. At first check it looked like I was getting 46. But I just put a tank of Premium in it and am gonna check that. Of course it may be I'm just twisting the throttle a bit too much (if that's possible )

I'm not overly worried about the mileage but Dad's is reading 57mpg and mine is at 46 seems a bit off. (he's still in the break in on his so that is helping him I think)

So if I should get something for my bike which one. I have no clue where to start looking.

Thanks

Milage is greatly affected by how you drive. The same bike side by side, one riden more conservatively and one more aggressively can have a 20mpg difference. An exhaust by itself should not have an effect on milage as my understanding is the previous generation doesn;t have a mass air sensor, so the engine cannot tell it is flowing more air. it would require a re-map to change the fuel usage:confused:
Though I am sure someone with more knowledge will come on and correct me if I am wrong.:beatnik:

My 2005 also has the Scorpion slip on with no other mods and runs fine. Coming up on 75K. Pipe went on at just over 1K.
My average mileage is 50 to 52, but have seen it anywhere from 39 to 59. Depends on how its being ridden.
Premium gas in a Strom is just a waste of money. Its designed to run on regular.
Newer (07 and up) models tend to get better milage. 2012 even more so.

Mine runs fine too. I was just hoping I hadn't missed something. I'd say I'm probably running similar to what your running. The reason I dumped some Premium in there was my bike has 11k on it is all. I just wanted to run a tank or two of the good stuff in attempts to flush it all out....or so was my thinking. For a couple bucks I figured it can't hurt anything.

I've been riding it harder than I probably will on a trip. But not terrible. Love the sound

Its hard to know for sure but unless its a case of undiagnosed 'aggressive throttle hand' its possible that whoever had it added something like a power commander so that the fuel/air mix could be richened up to accomodate the pipe. I would think the most likely place to mount one would be under the seat so you might take the seat off and see if you spot one on there.
I would not think just adding a slip on with no other changes would account for the hit in mileage. If anything the bike would tend to run leaner.
Of course this is assuming its in good tune with a clean air filter, yada, yada.

If I had any doubts like you I would pull the spark plugs and have a look at the colour.

Just a thought - you said you love the rumble & the bike runs great. 46 is fine for mpg. Perhaps it ain't broke - spend your Farkle budget on more riding until you really need something...

A friend of mine and I have DL1000 which are set up alomost identically except I have Leo Vince's and he has the stock exhaust. On trips together where we are riding at similar speeds and with similar levels of aggression we get almost identical mileage. For what its worth -- I don't think the slip-on should affect mileage unless you have to richen the bike up for them -- it doesn't sould like you need to do that -- one question -- could the the previous owner have had the bike richened?

Pulling the plugs on any second hand car or bike will tell you a lot about the motors and how they were treated.

Rich, lean, burning oil or even a poor service history can all be found by pulling the plugs.

If I buy anything second-hand I pull a plug before I hand over the cash, yes I get some strange looks but I don't get caught out by the shonks.
