Regarding my GEOS member rescue benefit, that I subscribe to through my SPOT account for which I pay an additional yearly charge of $12.95 I've just learned from speaking with the GEOS staff at 1 888- 460-4554 that the costs for any emergency services (ambulances, helicopter etc) will only be covered if my SPOT unit was activated. So in other words if a buddy riding with me, calls police and an ambulance using a cell phone, I have no GEOS benefits that will pay any of the emergency costs.
So if you have a SPOT and GEOS benefits be sure that anyone with you knows the importance and knows how, to activate your unit.

I read a lot of Pro's and Con's on the Spot. I'd like to have one, but I'm just not convinced yet. If I have an emergency and press the button I want to be damn sure someone shows up, soon..........TD

I've had GEOS emergency evacuation insurance for a few years.. Won't go on a long trip with out it..I don't have a spot, but my riding buddy has one...
Just call your auto or work insurance and ask them if they will pay for a heliocopter evac or air evac back home....
Buddy of mine got stuck with a $7000 hilo ride from the Cherahola to Knoxville a few years ago... OUCH!!

$7000 is really cheap for a medevac helicopter ride.. Usually the launch fee is 10K. That means if they lift with you on board, it's 10K, then its in the region of $130 a mile for transport. This is actual miles flown, not straight line distances. This is not an inexpensive endeavor... However, can you put a price on your life? There are several companies which provide insurance for medevac both on a national and international level which are not tied to a spot..

Spot is good for telling the world where you are, but there are better professional services for even doing that. If you're looking for medical evac, MedJetAssist is the way to go. They'll take the bike too.

I really like the SPOT concept and had a membership for more than two years but I found during that time that the reception seemed spotty and very sensitive to the location of the SPOT unit. Also I found out if its located to close to a GPS that its reception can be adversely affected. I used it on a trip where we ran the Pony Express Trail and the old Transcontinental Railroad bed. It only tracked about 1/2 half the trip even though most times we were in very open areas and I had it in the same location on my bike everyday -- I didn't renew my mebership after that.
