I'm new to the whole V-Strom, riding a bike and having fun thread...:)hurray:) and was wondering about bike to bike communication. I've been riding with my son and would like to the opportunity to talk with him while riding..........you know......"turn here"........look for the next exit that kind of thing.............someone suggested a "Shurberth" but its pretty pricey....any suggestions etc. are welcomed. Thanks John

The riding group I've ridden with for a few years (just got my wee last September -not ridden with them on it yet) uses CB's which is awesome. At that time, I had an '83 Yamaha Venture (installed a J&M CB/sound system, which I've moved over to my wee). Of course, in that riding group it's pretty much large touring bikes ; wings, Harleys, Yamaha's, etc., so the CB/sound route is stock a lot of the time. I definitely prefer being able to communicate when riding in a group. The local Vstrom guys are fun to ride with. They don't have bike to bike coms though. I don't have any idea if they would be open to investing in CBs or having bike to bike coms.
The other thing I like about my system is I have an am/FM radio connected for commute traffic reports /music, mp3 music, & XM radio through my Garmin 665 GPS.(oh yeah, and my Valentine 1 Radar Detector).
You get used to plugging into the bike. Wireless is definitely a lot more convenient, but i never found a good option that did everything I wanted before I invested in my J&M.

Check out the Cardo Scala Rider G9. When my wife rode with me, they worked great. You can pair them together as well as your phone and plug in an iPod. I believe you can pair up to 4 or 5 devices. They are supposed to have a range of 1.6km, I can't confirm this because she rode passenger.

If I remember correctly, the G series are backwards compatible with the Q series, but not vice versa. You can also pair multiple Scala Riders together.

Like seats I have wasted a small fortune on sound/communication devices for bikes.

I now have one that I am satisfied with. SENA SMH-10. My son has the -5 version and it is just as good for communication but lacks a couple features that some might miss.

The Sena comes with a part that easily attaches to your helmet. This has speakers that Velcro into the helmet and a boom microphone that is fairly sturdy and easy to place and doesn't move around all the time. The speakers that come with this unit are so much better than any of the other brands I have tried! That might be due in part to the units ability to drive them properly but the effect is good. These are usable even with earplugs in. Sound quality when listening to music won't be great but for phone and intercom use they are just fine.

The intercom works great. Rider to passenger and to another bike as well. 2-3 hundred yard range in the mountains and further in line of sight.

I also bought the optional mounting base that allows use of earbuds. You plug the earbuds into the base and depending on what earbuds you have the sound quality becomes outstanding.

You can buy these in a "pair" and cost is competitive with other decent offerings.

My research let me to the Sena SMH10-11. The -11 model is recommended for modular helmets - the microphone is not attached directly to the unit itself but attached to your helmet. It is on its way to me so I can't comment on how well it works yet, but for value and features based on everything I read, it was clearly the better option for me. Contact Adam at RocketMoto.com. He'll take good care of you.

My wife plus 4 friends and I have used autocomm since the early 90's. I have GPS, CB, RADAR Detector and XM radio all through the Autocom unit. I also like Cb for the rare times that I am on superhiways and get the truckers info ref, traffic, police etc. It is tricky to get a good clean CB signal but once set-up no problems. Also able to talk with the large touring bikes and cruisers that come stock with cb radios.

Well I got the senas installed last night and to me it sounds pretty good. Volume was sufficient to be heard at 75mph with stock shield. It was almost enough to drown out the gazillion June bugs hitting my faceshield!! Please with it so far...

I don't know if you wear earplugs but if you do it helps tone down the treble of the speakers a bit and makes them sound a lot less "tinny". I wound up switching over to the earbud baseplate after about a year of use.
