SS1000, anyone?

Just checking to see if there's any interest in getting a few V-Strom's together for an IBA Saddle Sore 1000 ride?

First, there's these rides on April 28th:

http://www.mctourer.com/rides/2007/SS1K/index.html

Or possibly we could put together something on our own. I think a mid to late March timeframe is good, would rather get it in before the weather turns too hot. I don't have any specific route or starting location in mind just yet.

So, any takers?

If the timing is right count me in.

Just for chits and grins here are some mileage figures. Ocala, 75 to just south of Atlanta, 20 over to Columbia, 26 to 95, 95 to 10 and 10 back down 75, Ocala
1047 miles, all slab tho.

Tampa Tom said something about the trip including the Keys.

Charlie...We scrapped the Keys idea because of the Nascar traffic that weekend. We ended up going I-75 to Macon, GA....Hwy 129 to Madison, GA...I-20 to Columbia, SC.....I-95 to Jacksonville.....over to Hwy 301 and back to I-75 to Tampa. It was 1,038 beginning to end.

Took 20 1/2 hours with some added time on a few stops. Left at 2:00 AM and got back at 10:30 PM. The time in the saddle was no problem at all. Thought it would be a big issue but turned out to be OK. Had some fellow riders hook up with us in Valdosta for breakfast and in Savannah for lunch. Having people waiting to eat with us was a nice break in the ride.

Ocala is a little farther north than where I want to start. I'm thinking the Leesburg-Clermont area myself, somewhere just off the Turnpike. As far as timing, I don't have any specific requirements but would like to get it in before the end of March just so it's done before the weather gets too hot.

I've thought of doing an SS1000 before and the route I came up with then mirrors the route from the MCTourer ride with the St. Pete starting location, for the most part. Besides starting in Orlando, the biggest difference is that the route follows the Turnpike south to 441 at Yeehaw Jct., then down to Okeechobee. Not superslab, but a rural highway I've ridden before that I know you can keep up a brisk pace on. Also got off I-75 at Ocala and took 27 to Tallahassee. Not sure of the condition of that road, though. Then it was I-10 to Jacksonville, I-95 to I-4, then back to Orlando.

Jet,

That section is a nice ride but you've got the risk of school busses and farm equipment especially on week days. Weekends would be better. Also speed traps on numerous small towns: High Springs, Fort White, Mayo, Branford....
It would be more difficult to keep the pace.
But it is a nicer ride than I-75 and I-10.
Sounds like fun. If I thought I could stay awake and allert for 20 hours I might be tempted.

I'm with you Winnie. I do not like riding much before sun-up or much after sun-down. It's always fun to ride with The Gang, though.

If I get a good night's sleep the day before and put a bottle of beer kinda dangling in front of my helmet, I could give this one a shot. BTW, the MCTF has their act together. It was their Coast to Coast event Jet Jaguar and I did last fall.

This is Florida, so photos from Key West at the Hwy end might be neat.
I know back tracking is not the norm but the water is only double beautiful going & coming back.
But whatever you "ya'll" come up with be neat aswell.
So Wolfgang & Carol would like to be in.
Would there be a central starting point for all?

Here's a route that I made up a while back...

Most people suggest not including Key West due to traffic problems. However I might risk it for a ride to Key West. If you were to bale out of a SS1000, what would be a better place to do it other than Key West?

Mike, FWIW I wouldn't recommend the Keys for an IBA route. I did one going in (I had to end in Key West) and was VERY thankful I wasn't "on the clock" both directions. Your first map looks pretty good if your just trying to complete the run. May I suggest non-slab roads if you're looking for a journey. For example, instead of going to East Naples perhaps take FL-29 to US-27 to FL-19 through Ocala NF (I think I have the road #;s right). Are you trying to do a SSS1k (FL) or simply a SS1k?

Any help I can lend to the plannig of the ride, just holler. Might even be interested in doing on the Strom, (did it once on the "other' bike). Let's discuss more next month at the meet and greet.
