Iron Butt 1000 October 10ish, ending in Fort Myer

Hey folks!

I'm leaving Winchester VA, 20165 and going for the IB1K. My Plan is to take 81 south to 70 and then head over to 95 and catch a nap in Jacksonville. I've heard that 10 is a poor place for motorcycleists. What efficient way would you all recommend to get to Fort Myer/Captiva Island?

I-10 is OK. Less traffic than ther other interstates. Keep in mind there are only 2 N/S interstates in this entire state and they are clogged with trucks going fast.

For your trip I'd take I-10 west from Jax, South on 301 , take one of the state roads in Ocala west to I-75 and south from there. Total trip time to Sanibel should be about 6 hours.

If you want to take 95, I wouldn't go much further south than I-4. Gets crazy down there around Mee Yom Mee. You could end up spending three hours smelling diesel axhaust and going nowhere.

Good luck!

Jax to Fort Myers

Why not try Florida Highway 121? You can take I-10 west from Jax, then go south on 121 through Macclenny FL, the county seat of Baker County and the site of several fast food chain outlets. FL 121 gets you to Gainesville more efficiently than I-10 & I-75 can, for several reasons:

121 is more direct, although it does have a few curves.

Almost nobody uses it, so you smell Florida instead of exhaust.

You go more slowly but get to Gainesville sooner than via I-10 & I-75.

If you reach Gainesville at rush hour, take FL-24 to I-75; at idle hours, you can take 121 all the way to I-75, passing all sorts of gas stations and fast food outlets in the city.

You will reach I-75 near mile marker 378, not far north of where FL Turnpike veers off to the left and much of the traffic leaves I-75.

The suggestion to take 301 from near Jax is also very good, especially if you have had enough of Interstate highways. 301 goes all the way to Sarasota, but do not take it to Sarasota because you will waste a lot of time in Palmetto & Bradenton. When 301 crosses I-75 near Palmetto, forsake 301 and go south on I-75. I did a lot of 301 last week and it was smooth and clear. You will see a lot of towns and take longer than I-75, by at least an hour between Ocala and Palmetto.

CAUTION: the town of Waldo, on 301, is a speed trap. Obey the speed limit near and in Waldo. (Just don't ask where it is!)

Enjoy the Sunshine State (an ambiguous nickname - NM & SD use it too!)

Short Cut through South Carolina & Georgia

Ken, I have travelled (by van) south from the junction in VA of I-81 and I-77 many times, and here is my favorite route to FL. It's a mix of Interstate and secondary highways and I think it's very efficient.

I-77 south from I-81 into and through NC and to Columbia SC. Get off I-77, exiting to the right, near Columbia SC at exit 1, then keeping left to turn left onto US-321 southbound. 321 is mostly one lane each way through about a dozen towns with mainly Scandinavian names, then it joins US-301 in Ulmer. When 321 veers off to the south, stay on 301 all the way to and through Georgia until you get to Folkeston GA, then watch carefully for GA-121 veering off to the right. Take GA-121 to the Florida border, where the road becomes FL-121. CAUTION: slow to 45 as you cross the bridge into Florida, and smile pretty at the State Trooper on the left side of the road, then carry on south into Macclenny (and then continue on FL-121 as above). Drawback of this route: only one rest area, just a mile into GA, and it closes at about 5:30 PM.

Hope you like it!
