Stromette coming to the Sunshine State... ;-)

.... I'm keeping my fingers crossed it stays sunny the entire time!!
If all goes well I'll be ending my "USA Four Corner" ride in Key West around the 19th of next month (Sept). Trying to build a FL contact list so if you're up for being on it let me know. Any suggestions or concerns also appreciated. My route from Key West and out of FL is very undecided at this point...would love to follow a local Stromtrooper around their favorite roads.

I'll try and get a weekend off and run you through some of the prettiest areas I know of in central Florida.

What day do you expect to be in state?

If everything goes as planned w/no weather/bike issues to contend during the 8k miles it will take me to get there then I'll take a guess and say Sept 20/21 I'll be in Key West celebrating! 8) Actually, you can track the whole trip here thanks to Stromtrooper SCraig's nifty map: STROMETTE's FOUR CORNER RIDE

What city are you near? Do I recall correctly you the Stromtrooper in FL that has a lift in your garage?

Actually, there is no real city that I am near - which is wonderful.

The Ocala National Forest is the northern boundary for my location. No development to my north.

Yes, I do have a lift, a full complement of tools and the knowledge to use them. Do you need a servie depot in Florida?

If I'm off that weekend, which looks good at this time, I'll be happy to get you headed in the correct direction, after a slight diversion though some of the prettiest riding in Florida.

Your visit honors our peculiar state.

Dear Stromette,

I live in Sarasota, on Florida's west coast about half way between Fort Myers and Tampa. If you elect to travel along this coast, you will probably choose between the dullness of Interstate Highway 75 and the endless urban blight of U.S. Highway 41, also known as the Tamiami Trail (because it linked Tampa to Miami when it was built).

You may learn more about our state by taking an old highway that goes through the middle of the state, such as U.S. 27. I hope other Floridians give their opinions about this suggestion.

The further north you go in Florida, the more Florida resembles a southern state!

I hope that I can ride part of the way with you! This June I rode 6300 miles across the western parts of Canada and the U.S.A., and I would often have appreciated some company on the road.

Good luck and happy travels!

Stromette,

I actually live down in the keys, and work in Key West. That's the good news. The BAD news is that I am selling my bandit in two days......GAH!

Luckily the two other roommates have a baby ninja and a marauder 800, so I can still satisfy the urge to two-wheel every now and again.

I go through bikes pretty quickly (I'm fickle like that) - I started on an SV650, then a Magna, now the Bandit 1200.....and I'm pretty sure my next bike will be the Wee. I have a cross country trip coming up next year that I think it will be great on.

Nevertheless, I will sponsor a round in Key West with ya, if we get to look over the bike and you tell me about all the goodies that I've been reading about for the last week on this site...

Cheers.

Sometimes the the water near Florida STINKS!

Dear Stromette,

If you are trying to decide whether to ride along Florida's east or west coast, there is something you ought to know about the Gulf of Mexico.

Sometimes a little or a lot of Florida's west coast is afflicted with something called Red Tide. It can happen on the Atlantic coast as well, but I think it seldom does.

"Red Tide is the common name for a bloom of microscopic algae, officially called Karenia brevis, that releases a toxin that can kill fish and cause coughing, sneezing and watery eyes in humans." (from St. Petersburg Times Aug 29 2006)

Before commiting to ride along Florida's west coast, check and see where there might be Red Tide. You won't want to be within a couple of miles of the coast where Red Tide is present, and swimming is out of the question.

At present, I am sad to say that plenty of the Gulf coast is afflicted. It may be gone by mid-month when you expect to visit, but then again it may endure for several weeks more. Please check with this site:

http://research.myfwc.com/features/v...le.asp?id=9670

or else search on "Red Tide" and follow any link you like.

Good luck!

Stromette and the Sunshine State

Stromette,

I wish you the safest of journey's as you cross our nation and look forward to meeting you in person as you will passing through Miami on your way to Key West.

I will be out of town through the 18th but will be back and (hopefully) available to join you on your final leg to Key West. Key West will be recovering from the Peterson's(HD Dealer) Annual Poker Run, which is the 9/15-9/17.
The ride down is long(3 hrs) but beautiful as you will see for yourself. Atlantic Ocean on one side and the Gulf on the other.
It is one of the most popular rides for bikers in South Florida.

I'll be monitoring your progress and look forward to your blogs.

If us, Florida Strom Riders gets this right, when you arrive into Florida I am sure about 1/2 your Florida ride will be with company.
I live on the west coast of Florida also. Crystal River FL. My son owns a motorcycle shop with full repair facilities. Maybe a boat ride to see a Manatee or two. Crystal River is a very nice place and we do have some great roads. I can even lay out a all back road track if you like.
Anne, my wife says the extra bedroom will be open if so desired.
I am retired from the military and can ridse a ways with you.
