Red face Too Early to Ride to Canada

Tuesday April 26 is really too soon to ride to Canada.
I know this, because I have done it a few times.

Well, today is the first day of my 75th spring,
and it smacked me hard, right in the riding muscles,
which are probably in my head.

Anyway, I plan to ride to Ontario, starting April 26.
If one of you wishes to accompany me, I will pay some of your costs.

Depending on plans which the Ontario Stromtroopers have not yet
made, the date of my departure may be delayed by one week.

If you want to research what I expect to find in Ontario,
please research the posts of Juan Tanamera.

Keith this is the mildest spring in my memory and the first year that I have ridden every month of the winter at some point or another. (Generally Feb is a non-riding month because of extreme cold and lake effect snow but not this year. I scheduled a recal in February because of it but could have ridden most days when it was in the shop.)

So yeah, I think April should be fine. ( BTW my pool is sceduled to be open May 5th.)

Hi Keith, I am up in Northern Ontario if you are driving by and want some company drop me a line. I know the landscape from North Bay to Hearst and west to Sault Ste Marie. Salmon fish that way in thefall. there are some amazing twisties and views. just look out for the 100s of deer and moose.

It isn't "Whoever dies with the most toys wins''
Its "Whoever played with his toys the most wins!!!! "

Change of Date

The ride that I am aiming for is the annual Spring Ride of Ontario's Stromtroopers. I have participated in this ride about six times, sometimes starting from a location in Ontario that I was busy visiting, and sometimes all the way from Florida. This year, the ride will occur on Saturday May 7, so I will start North approximately Tuesday May 3.

Thank you, Mr. Kym, for the offer of company in Northern Ontario. I have been there a few times, and I enjoy Northern Ontario every chance I get, but I will not be going north of Huntsville in May.

I expect to visit Ontario for all of July and August, and may ride through your part of the world. My Wee-Strom has crossed the Mackinac Bridge twice, but has not yet been North of Lake Superior.

Thanks for the update on the weather, V-Tom. I get my television signals from Shaw (formerly StarChoice), so I see Canadian weather reports and forecasts rather often. Not many TV viewers in Southwest Florida can choose among nine TV signals from British Columbia, but I can. I look forward to seeing you early next month.

In 2000 I spent the last week of April driving from Ottawa to Vancouver... Just dress warm! Do you have a heated vest? Keep an eye on the weather 2-3 days before leaving.

marcham, you are either more interpid than I am, or else far luckier.

I have tried to ride to Vancouver three times:
June 2006, I rode from Toronto via Denver to Vancouver, back via Edmonton.
I attended my son's wedding and had a wonderful time both ways.

May 2010, I tried to ride from Sarasota to Vancouver, but was
absolutely assaulted by crosswinds in Arizona, to I ran for home.
Good thing I did, because a friend of mine, riding a CADILLAC,
was blown from one lane to another of the highway in Nevada (part of my route).

June 2010, I tried to ride from Sarasota to Vancouver, but encountered
snow in Colorado and learned I would have 600 miles of it, so I went home again.
I thought that Colorado and Utah were downright MEAN to entertain snow,
in the middle of JUNE, I ask you, when I was planning to ride across them!

I would not try to ride from Ottawa to Vancouver in April.
You are a better man than I, as is Gunga Din.

Truth be told I was much younger, very motivated (new job waiting in 5 days) and took advantage of a southern route through the US to avoid snow in the Canadian prairies. Luck was also on my side. Cool ride for sure but no frost. Still, not as cold as going for a swim in the gulf in Destin FL last January... Certain body parts took a day to show themselves again.

2 weeks ago we were riding motorcycles in Manitoba, it was 15 deg C! Sometimes you just luck out with an early spring. Wish I could help out with your trip, best of luck.
