Going to Ocala on Memorial day week-end

I am planning a trip from Miami to Ocala national forest on Memorial day week-end with a bunch of friends.

Would anyone located in that area give me some suggestion as to where to ride, a hotel or other place to stay, and things to do.

If any Strommer want to join, let me know.

Thanks.

There are good roads to the west of the forest, if you take 40 towards the city of Ocala. Silver Springs is that way, too. I led a group ride in that area last summer, I can upload the route sheet if you're interested. North of the forest is the Fort Gates Ferry. It's a neat little 2-car ferry boat that crosses the St. Johns River. There's a few miles of dirt road to get to it.

Planning on any dirt riding in the forest? ONF is mostly sugar sand and the V-Strom is too heavy to be much fun in that. It's doable though, if you're stubborn enough. If you stick to the bigger forest roads it's not too bad. They're mostly hard-packed, but you'll still come across patches of deep sand. Again, I can recommend some specific routes if you're interested.

It's not an adventure unless you need a tent, a passport, and a leather glove for your shooting hand.

Jean Marc;
Good to hear from you again! Don't know if we are going to be around that weekend or not. If we are available, I'll be in touch. Who all are coming with you??

Hi Jet,

I don't think we'll be planning any dirt riding, as I am currently riding with two beemer, RT and GT, however, I might wanto to have some fun myself and test the bigger forest road with hard pack trail. Any suggestion will be welcome, and please if you can upload the route sheet would be interesting to look at. Any suggestion on lodging? I am interested in going to Silver Springs to scuba dive in the cave too.

Thanks.

Hi Jim:

I will be riding with Richard that you met when we came to Daytona last October, and Rusty who owns an RT. We all come with our significant other for that week-end. Marco was on copy of the invitation, but he has not replied so far, though I am not sure if he will come as he is busy with his business.

I'll check the calendar. If I'm around, I could take you on a tour of Lake County. We have some of the best country back roads and rolling hills in the entire state.
Sounds like a real opportunity to plan a ride and print up a route sheet.

I'll post more info.... I'm thinking about doing a Three day trip on Memorial weekend. I haven't firmed up those plans yet. If I don't do the trip, I'll be happy to play tour guide. I'll try to confirm soon.

Diving Silver Springs

It is actually a state law prohibiting scuba diving around the head springs of the Silver River. It takes a lot of work and knowing the right people to get a permit to dive the springs and would probably have to be for an approved scientific research project. I know several people who have dove the main cave, and they told me there is a large cavern room but the water enters from many cracks between the rocks and does not have a large cave passage to dive. It is legal to dive in the river starting about a half mile down from the springs. There is a sign telling you where this point is. You must have a boat and a dive flag and watch out for boat traffic.
