Those of us who work in the trade see this more than the OEM's would like you to believe. This problem I've encountered more than a few times on Suzuki bikes and Quads. It usually happens out of the warranty period but it does happen. The problem has been addressed with a redesigned rotor with a metal shroud encasing the magnets.

[SIGPIC][/SIGPIC]K7 Wee, rebuilt like new and then some after collision with deer and mildly farkled.

There have been many more reports since I wrote that over a year and a half ago. I guess I was tempting fate. When was that shroud instituted? The reports seem to be pretty much all on 1000s. Do you see many 650s with loose magnets?

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

So does this mean if I have this issue again on my '06 DL1000 and need to reorder another OEM rotor should I expect a "redesigned" rotor with the metal shroud encasing the magnets?

This won't add much to the discussion, but why are these damn things only glued in the first place. Why can't they be bossed and pinned in position as well. This is ridiculous. I loved my Vee, and never had any issues such as this, but I was always very nervous about the price of replacement parts.

Around '06 I think but don't quote me on that. I believe the problem is more prevalent on the Quads than on the bikes and I have seen this kind of failure on an older RMX 250 recently as well but that is probably related to age and abuse. The newer rotors have the magnets completely encased in metal but I can,t say for sure the magnets couldn't still come adrift inside the shroud if the glue failed. At least the magnets couldn't come in contact with the stator and destroy it.

Stator magnet creep

I discover that I have the same problem - all the magnets lumped together - plus one coil burned out on the stator. My stator failures by manufacturer are:

Suzuki 2 out of 2 bikes (12K and 42K miles)
Honda 1 out of 2 bikes (11K miles)
Yamaha 0 out of 3 bikes

Might influence my future purchases. You listening Suzuki?

You all will just LOVE this one......

I bought my '07 about 15 mos. ago and traveled over 1,000 miles round trip to pick it up from the 2nd owner.
It's Very clean, well farkeled & under 3k miles for a killer price.

After a couple of months the "Fun" begins....
The Battery seems weak altho replaced when I picked it up.....
The result was non starting at times, no specific pattern to it.
Charging voltage strangely low... hmmm.
pulled the cover off & found I needed all 3 related components, rotor (magnets loose), Stator coil, and regulator....
I did research & found (thru Suzuki no less) that it had been in the shop under warrenty for the same issues 3 times before. Hmmm.
Goodwill warremty??? I don't think so Cupcake!!!!!
I tried to talk with them but the service rep refused to even return my calls.
My dealer ended selling me the rotor for cost + 10% with a gasket, regulator I got w/ wiring harness was the Shindigem' unit from one of this site's vendors, then a stator was purchased from RealShelby (thanks, Terry!) to compleat the repairs.
The good news is no more problem (so far..) w/ the charging system.
Next and current "Issue" is the bad fuel injector that stuck open.
No biggie, right???
Weeellll yes it is.... turns out that they do not stock this unit anywhere in the states & it's on backorder 'till end of Oct. or Nov. sometime before it even ships.... AND the topper is: A 1,000 V-STROM IS THE ONLY VEHICLE THIS INJECTOR IS FOR..... nothing else uses it!
I was told it was likely that should I have the dealer do the repairs it will be covered under the "emissions controll warrenty".
Then today the folks @ the dealer told me Suzuki called 'em back & said Hell No!!! to the warrenty approval, even After waiting on the part that long..

Fortunately I found a used one and it is on it's way as we speak now, BUT I use this bike as my main transportation unit. I live in North Louisiana so understand the riding season is virtualy a 12 month a year one.
I like it a lot, espcialy since I've put on the Dolbeck box, Leo Vince pipes, and 2 piece Corbin seat.... but
I've kinda lost confidence in it and for damn sure have lost all confidence in Suzuki as a manufacturer!
I have owned 5 Suzuki's over the years but rest assured This Will be the Last One!!!!!

Loose magnets are very rare on 650s so far. They used to be very rare on 1000s too though. Time will tell.
