This may seem all to obvious to many of you, but if I overlooked it, surely others have as well...
I took a trip to Phoenix a couple years ago from the east coast. It was Thanksgiving weekend and it was my first trip to the southwest. While there, my wife and I drove (a rental car, not motorcycles) up to the south rim. I was decked out for some nice warm desert hiking. Dumb idea. I had no idea we would gain 5500 feet in altitude by the time we got there. It was cold and windy at the canyon and we were not prepared. Because of that, we were unable to do much sight seeing. What a HUGE disappointment. I kick myself every time I think about it because I'm usually Mr. over-preparation.
In short- Be prepared for both extremes with the weather, and everything in between.
It's a beautiful place though, and I would love to go back sometime. I was particularly fond of the area around Flagstaff, even though I only got to pass through there. Enjoy your trip and be safe!
