I'm trying to arrange to go. I've never been (and Mark I sent you a PM asking some questions) and I don't really have a plan at this point. I may try to go early and catch the Supercross event or go later for the Superbike race. Someone said there's a flat track race also but I don't have details. If someone out there knows about the events or where I can find a listing I'd appreciate it.
Here is the official website:
I try to make the Daytona 200 every year, it's actually why there is a Bike Week, although most of the attendees don't know that. The flat track races are both next to the big Speedway track and at other venues nearby.
Aside from the races, people like to visit Main Street, which is a 24X7 party and parade of bikes out on the beach.
At the track all the manufacturers set up giant tents to show off products. Many offer demo rides too, which are great fun, but you have to arrive early in the am to sign up for them.
The "pirate" crowd hangs out a "Destination Daytona," which was built by Bruce Rossmeyer. It's a huge HD dealership, a bunch of stores like JP Cycle, a couple hotels, bars, etc. Sort of like a permanent bike show/event.
The Progressive International M/C Show sets up at the Daytona Convention Center, which is a block from Main Street on the beach. It's free...not much to it really. Arai, Tourmaster, and other accessory manufacturers are usually there with booths. They also have custom bikes, stunt shows, etc. The past few years Suzuki has been there as well as at the track.
If you've never gone, go. You'll never see so many bikes in one place anywhere else. Usually the weather is great, although there's no guarantees. In past years getting a room was next to impossible, but since '08 it's been a lot easier. There's lots of camping if you want to go that route. Just don't fall asleep on the beach...the cops don't like that.
