3 State Loop:

This is the 3-State Loop ride which is 205 miles & about 7 hrs ride time.

Leaves Ironhorse down US28 to US74, left on US74 for short distance & right on US28. Follows US28 though Franklin & Highlands. A short distance through the Georgia tar snakes and into South Carolina. Turns North after some of SC US28 onto SC107. Runs up SC107 until right on SC S-37-413 which turns into NC281. Right onto US64 for about 10 miles & then left on Parkway Rd. Parkway Rd to the top and then left onto a nice section of the Blue Ridge Parkway. The Parkway on down to US441 just North of Cherokee. Left on US441 and then right on US19. Follow US19 around the back of Cherokee & connect with US74 for the run back to US28 & Ironhorse. As and alternative you can stay on US19 through Bryson City & then connect with US74.

Dirt Route One:

This is Dirt Route one which is about 131 miles & 6-7 hrs ride time depending on stops.

It includes some nice backroad twisties to warm up on, a ride around Lake Santeetlah & the dam overlook. About 25 miles of nice dirt (The dirt Cherohala - NC81 & N. River Rd in TN) where street tires & two-up is OK. Which crosses under the Cherohala Skyway at the top of the mountain. Down River Road & the Bald River Falls into Tellico Plains for lunch. The Cherohala Skyway return via Robbinsville & Sweetwater Road back to US28 & Ironhorse.

Gap-Suches Loop:

This is the Gap-Suches Loop, which is about 273 miles & 9-10 hrs ride time. You can cut some miles & time by not doing the two-way Deals Gap section.

This loop starts by going up US28 to The Gap. A two-way trip through the gap, down US129 & then around Lake Santeethal to the Cherohala Skyway. Across the Cherohala to Tellico Plains, TN. From Tellico Plains down US68 through Ducktown to US60. US60 up to Suches & the down Wolf Pen Gap RD to US129. Up US129 to Old US64 (which turns into NC 141) & back to US129. US129 up to Robbinsville & Sweetwater RD back to US28 & Ironhorse.

Wayah Rd - Warwoman Rd Loop:

This is The Wayah Rd - Warwomen Rd Loop, which is about 234 miles and has a riding time of about 8-9 hrs.

Starts by running down Hwy 28 from Ironhorse to US74. US74 down along the river to Wayah Rd. Wayah Rd up toward Franklin & cut right on US64. Nice ride over the mountain to Lake Hiawassee where you make a left on Hwy 175. Down 175 which runs into US76 for a couple miles & right on Hwy17 to the Unicoi State Park. Left on Hwy 376 through the park & then left on Hwy 197 to Burton Dam RD, then right on Burton Dam Rd. Then left on Bridge Creek Rd after a few miles. Stay on Bridge Creek Rd for about 10 miles & then left on Davis Gap for about a mile. Then right on US76 for about 6 miles to Germany for Warwoman Rd connection. Continue up Warwoman Rd for about 14 miles to Pine Mountain where you go left on Hwy 28. Hwy 28 up though Highlands & Franklin all the way back to Ironhorse.

Deals Gap - Foothills Parkway - Park Loop:

This is the Hwy 28, Deals gap, Foothills Parkway, National Park & hwy 441 loop, which is about 142 miles and has a driving time of about 7 hours.

Starts by running up US28 from Ironhorse to Deals Gap. Through the gap to Foothills Parkway & then up the Foothills to Hwy 321. 321 down through Townsend (lunch) to park entrance. Through the Great Smoky Mountains National Park to Hwy 441. 441 down into Cherokee & then mostly highway back to Ironhorse.

Deals Gap - Ducktown loop - Cherohala Skyway Loop:

Entire route is 223 miles, but you can cut off about 80 miles by not taking the Ducktown loop out of Tellico Plains & just continue on the Cherohala.

This is hwy 28 to the gap, on through the gap and around some back-roads of Tennessee to Tellico Plains. The southern loop around Ducktown has some good roads & than back to Tellico Plains. From Tellico along the Cherohala Skyway to Robbinsville & than hwy 143 back to Ironhorse.

Rally.........2012

Put it on yer calender........NOW. We have a great time and the accomodations/food/facilities are A+++. The tent camping area does have a few trees for you hammock guys........and one common firepit next to the lodge complete with rocking chairs. The "trickling brook" next to the camping area is guaranteed to lul you to sleep at night (not to mention the mass consumption of alcohol.....bring your own......dry county)!!! Go to the Ironhorse website for a listing of all their accomodations (bunkhouse, private cabins, lodge, tent camping, gift shop, etc). I hope someone (?) will pony-up a slide presentation (Ride Report) like we had last Spring........Alaska tour.....it was great!!! Maybe some of our forum sponsors/owners would "donate" items for a Raffle (a free nights stay, vstrom parts, gift certificates........can't hurt to ask) ??????????

See ya in the Spring!!!!!

I wonna go, but one question though. Why on earth, RDV and V-Strom Gatherings, year after year, happen on the same weekend?

Great area

I attended the rally last fall and had a great time. Would definitely recommend both the riding in the area and Ironhorse Lodge. Have already committed the weekend before this spring's rally to be at Robbinsville for a GL1800 Darkside ride-in. Not a darksider myself, but a riding buddy is and have been going to these spring and fall about 3 years. Who knows, may make it anyway. Got any of that venison left, Paul?

OK, I think I made my decision. So far, at this very moment I'm planning to attend V-Strom Gathering this year. RDV is being held at the same location for the third time, but being new to America I want to discover more and meet more people.

I'm gonna be camping, will bring hard and light booze.

Is there any fees collected? What about meals, is it just in their bars or organized? I don't mind roughing it up and camping 100%, cooking, sleeping, drinking... What about showers? Baby wipes would work if no showers. What about toilets and stuff? I can also bring my own shovel and paper if needed as well, just need to know what to expect... Please share your past experiences...

I will put TKC80's for that event and will try to follow gravel and other unpaved rides or ride on my own. Dragon for dinner...

Showers are some of the best you will find......clean, heated (Winter), large, and each shower has it's own little changing room in front (private).....far from being "Primative". The facilities are top notch.......there is no "Bar".......BYOB (as already mentioned)......the Lodge has coolers you can rent for the weekend to keep your.........your............your "medications" cold with!!! Look at the pics on their website that Tyler posted the link to. Think of it as your "Upscale Campground"........

Exclamation Iron Horse Reminder that Rooms are held until 2/29/12

Got a random call from Randy from Iron Horse, because he didn't know who to call, and I just saw him at the PROGRESSIVE International Motorcycle Show in NYC.

Anyway.....he asked me to post a reminder on our chat sites to remind everyone that the cabin rooms are being held until the end of February, 2012.

As of yesterday, only 6 rooms have been reserved. After that Charlene will release the hold.
