V-strom West 2015 - July 10-12 in Fortuna CA

The VW meet is on it's way :-). I thought it was best to start a new thread for the actual meet rather than continue on the old pre-meet thread.

The date & place have been set. It’s July 10 – 12 in the city of Fortuna, CA. Fortuna is located at the western end of one of the top rated roads in the US, Hwy 36. According to a Fortuna web site, The Friendly City, Fortuna, California, Home of the Giant Redwoods! , it’s located far enough inland to avoid most of the cold and damp fog that the Pacific brings, but it’s close enough to the coast to have lower than inland temps.

Lodging seems to be very convenient with multiple motels/hotels, a camp ground, a gas station and restaurants within walking distance of each other.

Camping:
Riverwalk RV Park: Tent spot is $30.24 for two people, with a $5.60 per additional person. When I checked a couple of week ago there were 16 spots available.

Motel/Hotel:
I have spoken to two motels, see below. My wife (an ex-travel agent) is checking to see if there's any better prices available.

Super 8: Double: $160/night. Single: $130/night. A group of 10 or more will get $10/night off.
The Redwood: Wouldn’t give us a group discount as they have a family reunion booked that weekend. They quoted $100/night. Not sure what that pays for. Maybe per person in a double room?

Close by is also Comfort Inn & Suites Redwood Country and Best Western Country Inn.

Preliminary plans for rides:
Starting the rides going inland away from the colder (and probably foggy) coast. This means going west in the afternoon when inland is hot and the coast (hopefully) fog free and cooler in temperature. More details about the rides are coming.

Lost Coast: Exploring the Lost Coast roads.
Hwy 36: East to Red Bluff, slab it to Redding and take 299 back.
Crescent City: North along the coast.
Anyone have any other suggestions?

I am speaking to a couple of venues for a dinner on Saturday night. Waiting to hear back from Eel River Brewery and Funky Monkey.

Here's the attendee list. Not sure what the best way to keep a track of who is coming. Is it better I update the list in this post or should each of us just copy it each time and add the name?

Attendees:

Have fun - Hans

Unless site protocol has changed, you will not be able to edit your original post for attendees after a certain amount of weeks. I can't remember how many weeks though

I'm tentatively in.

Coming from Los Angeles, 655 miles , 10 hours. Anyone taking more than one day to get up there? Anyone taking the scenic route via the coast or just go the 5 all the way up?

I guess I should have checked the Internet instead of calling the Super 8. That's not a small difference. Crazy!

If that's true about editing then we better have people copy the list into their post and then add their name at the end.

Have fun - Hans

Route suggestion

Please, I beg you, change the route to include the section of Highway 3 from Hayfork to Weaverville. If Highway 36 is the band, highway 3 is the 3 carat diamond on top. 36 to 3 to Weaverville -- which makes a great halfway stopping point -- and then 299 back to Arcata/Eureka/Fortuna makes a great loop.

The second half of 36 from about Peanut to Red Bluff is great, but I-5 to Redding? In July? Are you insane? ;-)

Count me in as a maybe (I have a lot of other scheduling things to work out) but I'm usually making a trip down there to ride those routes at least once a year anyway.

Platina rd (a16) off 36 at Platina goes into Redding through Igo and easily connects to 299. It's been many, many years but I remember it as a nice small two lane rd. Others may have been on it more recently and comment

Out of Garberville there is a road to the W. that is narrow mostly paved( all repaired sections seem to be returned to gravel) and is a blast on the Strom. About 75+ miles and it comes out on Hwy 36 for the return. It goes thru the towns(No services) of Alderpoint and Zenia.
I am only a maybe until things get closer.

Stevewz - Nothing's set in stone. Personally I do like Hwy 3, it's great. Maybe we can return Hwy 36 from Red Bluff and then take 3 up to Weaverville and then 299 to the coast? Or, maybe some people want to do 36 both ways.

The reason to do 5 was to speed things up and to avoid back tracking. It's not fun, but on the other hand it's only 30 minutes.

Have fun - Hans

I was trying to go all the way to Red Bluff and get a group photo at the 140 mile sign. Thought it would be fun for everyone. The 16 turns off before the sign, but it's a much better route than 5. As I said earlier, nothing's set in stone, let's ride where it's the most fun for everyone.

bnr2old - That's the route I was thinking of. Alderpoint Road is a great narrow curvy road :-)
