The VW meet is on it's way :-). I thought it was best to start a new thread for the actual meet rather than continue on the old pre-meet thread.
The date & place have been set. It’s July 10 – 12 in the city of Fortuna, CA. Fortuna is located at the western end of one of the top rated roads in the US, Hwy 36. According to a Fortuna web site, The Friendly City, Fortuna, California, Home of the Giant Redwoods!
, it’s located far enough inland to avoid most of the cold and damp fog that the Pacific brings, but it’s close enough to the coast to have lower than inland temps.
Lodging seems to be very convenient with multiple motels/hotels, a camp ground, a gas station and restaurants within walking distance of each other.
Riverwalk RV Park: Tent spot is $30.24 for two people, with a $5.60 per additional person. When I checked a couple of week ago there were 16 spots available.
I have spoken to two motels, see below. My wife (an ex-travel agent) is checking to see if there's any better prices available.
Super 8: Double: $160/night. Single: $130/night. A group of 10 or more will get $10/night off.
The Redwood: Wouldn’t give us a group discount as they have a family reunion booked that weekend. They quoted $100/night. Not sure what that pays for. Maybe per person in a double room?
Close by is also Comfort Inn & Suites Redwood Country and Best Western Country Inn.
Preliminary plans for rides:
Starting the rides going inland away from the colder (and probably foggy) coast. This means going west in the afternoon when inland is hot and the coast (hopefully) fog free and cooler in temperature. More details about the rides are coming.
Lost Coast: Exploring the Lost Coast roads.
Hwy 36: East to Red Bluff, slab it to Redding and take 299 back.
Crescent City: North along the coast.
Anyone have any other suggestions?
I am speaking to a couple of venues for a dinner on Saturday night. Waiting to hear back from Eel River Brewery and Funky Monkey.
