V-strom gathering west - 2015

First, apologies for being so late with this announcement. I visited the home country (Sweden) in December and January is a very busy month at work. Anyway, I have been doing some preliminary planning for this year’s Western gathering.

We have narrowed it down to two options where to meet. One is Santa Rosa area and the other is Weaverville.

Santa Rosa is a larger town only an hour north of San Francisco. There are a couple of Suzuki dealerships and other motorcycle shops in the area. There are lots of great roads around here, but there may also be some traffic, being that it’s a more populated area. There are lots of motels and quite a few camping spots around, both in Santa Rosa itself and the surrounding area.

Weaverville is a smaller city between Redding and Eureka on Hwy 299, about 5 hrs. (freeway) north of San Francisco. There are lots of great roads nearby and less traffic compared to Santa Rosa area. The closest motorcycle repair shop seems to be in Redding, about 45 miles east. But, since we all have V-stroms we shouldn’t need to visit a repair shop (knock on wood).

There is a great motel, 49er Gold Country Motel 49er Gold Country Inn | Welcome in Weaverville. There are also camping in the area as well. I think the closest is about 8 miles out.

More info about places to stay will come as we decide location & dates.

As far as dates, on July 17-19 there is the eni FIM Superbike World Championship at Laguna Seca, FIM Superbike World Championship - Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca

I’d like to suggest we have the meet the weekend prior or the weekend after. This way if someone wants to see the race they can come early or stay after and enjoy some great riding and then go to Laguna Seca. What do you think?

Feel free to let me know your thoughts. Like I have to tell you to speak up :mod_biggrin:

Have fun - Hans

My vote is for Santa Rosa if we want to get the day trippers to attend. We get to draw on the population of a large metropolitan area. Weaverville is beautiful and all but there is a lot of awesome riding just outside Santa Rosa. Santa Rosa also has proximity to many wine country and coastal attractions. Weaverville is about riding and fishing, not much else up there.

I'm not sure I've really got anything worth saying, but you asked for thoughts so I'll chime in. And I'll add that the chances of me making the gathering this year are slim.

First thoughts seeing the two towns? I'm heading to Weaverville. In fact I did on my way home from the 2013 gathering in Ventura. Great roads, not much traffic (though on a weekend that could be different). Certainly not much to do apart from riding but that is the main thing we gather for, correct? I am concerned whether there is a meeting room at a restaurant in Weaverville that could handle the group if a good bunch attended.

Of course, I also passed through Santa Rosa after staying the night at Rohnert Park on my way home from the 2013 gathering. Came in from and then went back out to Hwy 1. The roads we hit were nice, but yeah, there's that traffic thing. HOWEVER, the value of locals, like the two who posted before me, is huge. I was amazed at some of the roads we hit at the Ventura gathering. Got us away from traffic and into some great riding.

Two good choices. Pros and cons for each.

Schucks. My dance card seems to be full that time already. Then again, Santa Rosa to Billings or Paonia to Billings? Oh the quandry!

I vote for exotic Weaverville.

Weaverville? THe Ducati folks will be there in June. No camping but for 8 miles? some of us are less motel inclined.

I love riding the Weaverville area but it can be quite hot in mid July. While Santa Rosa itself isn't thrilling, it does have more accommodations, a dealership, and many scenic roads leading to and from the coast. As long as riding doesn't include 101 anytime or the wine country on weekends, traffic can be minimalized in that area.

So far the date is leaning towards the weekend after the rally, i.e. July 25-26. As far as location it's pretty even. Temperatures can be hot in either place in July.

Looking at prices for lodging Santa Rosa area is higher. The motel in consideration, 49er Gold Country Inn, in Weaverville runs $55 or $70 for a single room. Add $5 for a double. Looking in Santa Rosa area the motel/hotels range from $95- $300/night.

Camping seems to be $20 - $30 per night in either place. In Weaverville there's lots of camping, but it's all outside town.

Have fun - Hans

There's actually a campground in town, but only for RV's, no tents. The closest tent campground is about 4 miles away. It's called East Weaver Campground and it's pretty rustic - there's is drinking water, but no showers or flush toilets.

Going further out there are 3-4 more at around 8-10 miles away.

Have fun - Hans
