Nova Scotia early September

With the blessings of my wife I'll be departing L.I. on Sept 2nd or 3rd, tarmacking through Maine, and am planning to tour as much of NS as I can reasonably fit in eight or ten days. Camping will be my preference, along with the occasional motel, depending on weather and stink factor. I'm intending to take my time, smell the flowers, enjoy the ride, hike a bit, and not worry about getting to the destination. I know I won't see the whole province and that's ok with me. I do plan on riding the Cabot Trail and exploring out of the way places, both coastal and inland. Wouldn't mind doing a bit of fishing and campfire dining, though I may talk myself out of that one.

September is still warm and dry (supposedly). Leaves will be turning, though not peaking, or so I hear. Best of all, the kids are back in school, so the summer crowds will be considerably emptied out.

Going solo is fine with me, but if there's anyone out there interested in joining up, either for part of the adventure, or the whole enchilada, cool. I'd love the company.

Tom

Tom, Austin. Is going up there at that time in the cape benton area. Also the ferry from portland maine is just. $59 saves you from slabbing and being more relaxed in NS. Iwas going to go but vaca time is limited. Ride safe my friend

I was thinking about doing the same ride, around the Cabot trail, first week of October if I can put it together.

Hey Stromdog, I know Aus is doing the trip Labor Day weekend. I'd have loved to tag along but he's leaving too early for my work schedule. I'm hoping we can at least meet somewhere for coffee, him riding south, me north.

So the ferry's that cheap! Ok, time to rethink slabbing it all the way. I would definitely enjoy that down time.

Dave, Oct could be a great time for NS - even fewer cars I'd guess. But it's too late for me. I'm hitting the sweet spot in my schedule. If you can manage to make some time first or second week of Sept, lemme know!

I'll be there too, Austin and I are going to the Salty Fog rally. It will be my fifth Salty Fog Rally trip. I will likely be on 4 wheels until my knee gets fixed. More info here:

Salty Fog 2014

As to the ferry, it wouldn't be my choice. I beat the old boat by 2 hours and that was the fast CAT. Complete fare info here: Ferry Operation Schedule for 2014 | Nova Star Cruises

If I can't ride the bike, yes. Just came from the ortho doc and got a fresh shot of cortisone. I'm still thinking of having the knee replaced in the fall. I only have about 200 miles on the bike this year, compared too some years when I've had 25k.

The Salty Fog Rally is a "rolling rally' -- not much riding, lots of hanging out and telling lies. 2 or 3 days in Larry's River, then to Cape Breton and Louisbourg, where there is a super campground on the water, a playhouse with Cape Breton music, dance, and entertainment, The Louisbourg Fortress (a living history museum akin to Old Sturbridge Village and Plimoth Plantation -- yeah I spelled it right), Meat Cove camping, and the Cabot Trail. Small Rally, maybe 12 people, but a whole lot of relaxation and fun and food -- hosted by Bob and Mary, who are spectacular hosts.

There's a good reason I'm going back for a 5th time, although to tell the whole story, this is rally #7, and I've started out for all of them. Turned around twice, last year for getting sick, and two years previous because I had a premonition -- it turned out to be real -- my first grand daughter was born that night.

Pix, from 2009 if you want to see them -- 278, bring a lunch!
