Now I've done it.
I've signed up for my first "scavenger hunt" motorcycle rally. And not a gentle-introduction-to-the-world-of-rallying 12- or 24-hour rally, either... a five-day rally. (What the hell was I thinking?)
Actually, I'm pretty excited about it. After following the 11-day Iron Butt Rally this past summer, I rode a "SaddleSore 1000" to gain admission to the IBA. Then I learned of the Motorcycle Endurance Rider's Association, and the "10n10 Plus" rally they're running next summer. I knew better than to sign on for the 10-day event, but thought I might have a chance at riding the five-day event without fatally embarrasing myself.
I imagine I'll ride the Vee somewhere between 4500 and 5000 miles the first week of next July, taking photos and snagging receipts at designated bonus locations, and getting far less sleep than I'm accustomed to. I will likely ride to many places I've never been before, including some I'd never have thought of visiting. After the rally wraps up in SLC, I'll ride the 500+ miles home.
The entrants will get the list of bonus locations 30 days in advance, so I should have plenty of time to plan the most bonus-rich route I can, given my long-distance abilities.
I've already started the preparations, including an MCCruise for the Vee and a sweet Bags Connection tankbag with GPS mount from Twisted Throttle. Add a SPOT tracker and a few other bits and pieces, and the bike will be ready to go. I've also started to get familiar with Microsoft Streets & Trips, which seems to be the major routing tool of choice for serious rally types.
If an adventure of this sort sounds appealing, you'll find additional information at the (rather badly out-of-date) MERA site
. Once there, click on Applications
, then 2014 10n10 Plus
. Note: this site is not very phone-friendly, in my experience.
It would be great to meet some other stromtroopers in SLC next July!
