It's also about the time brave Hungarians made a bid for independence 50 years ago. I hope things are going well for you folks.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

It was in 23rd Oct 1956
Yes, a revolution. The regime that time broke it with the help of the army of Soviet Union. They came with tanks. And stayed here until 1991.
No Western countries nor the US, nobody helped us.
A lot of people were sent to prisons or killed.

Then 33 years later, in 1989 it happened without blood. Hungary became Republic.

Some interesting thing during our socialist regime:

travelling to foreign countries was only possible into "friendly countries" (e.g. other communist nations). Into western countries only it was allowed only once in every 3 years. The money you could bring with you was limited in 100 DM (100 USD) no matter how long you stayed there.

there were 4 cars (Lada, Dacia, Trabant, Wartburg) you could buy, and you had to wait for one 1 year, after payed 10% of the price.

I was listening to a local radio station in Chicago that does descriptions of Christmas times in past years. Recently they talked about Christmas 1956. The first thing in the story was about how people in Chicago were opening their homes to those who had recently fled Hungary. Apparently, many had relatives in the area and a large number sought asylum here. I was 11 years old at the time and I still remember seeing the news of tanks rolling through Budapest. I was so sad for the people there. Seeing the movie "The Unbearable Lightness of Being" brought all those memories back.
