Motorcycle rental in Italy?

Hello from accross the pond!

My grilfiend and I are planning a two week trip to Italy this fall (early october 2009). We are intending to stay mostly in Northern Italy and will be flying into Milano. At this point we have no concrete plans but will probubly start with a 3 day cooking school, this will give us a destination and "first thing to do" while helping us get used to the culture, also we love to cook and drink wine. From there we will branch out into exploring as much of Italy as we can in the remaining time but intend to "not plan" at least 1/2 of our time there to allow for sponteneity.

I introduced the idea of renting a motorcycle to my girlfriend and she actually liked the idea...I was surprised to say the least. I currently own an 04 DL1000 and I am just looking for ideas on where to rent a motorcycle, how much it may cost, places to go, things to do, roads to ride, for someone who has never been to Europe or Italy before. We are both in our early 50's with a combined weight of 300 lbs without gear so a 650 or 1000 would be fine.

Thanks in advance from a fellow Strommer

Be mindful of your thoughts for they betray you.

all the big cities in italy have easy motorcycle rental. Ive been on lots of occasions and its great. Watch out for the ladies of the night... daytime... whatever they are everywhere! espicially on the main roads the truckers use.

Our first petrol stop in italy was highly amusing when we discovered a porn vending machine....No one over here believed us!

Italy is a nice place but also has its poor areas, away from the tourist zones.
We were chased by the Carabinieri in some old 1980s panda... needless to say we didnt bother stopping

Anyways its a great place. Enjoy!

Porto Fino motorcycles rental?

I'm going to be in Porto Fino for a couple days and am thinking of renting a motorcycle for the day, maybe as early as tomorrow. Does anyone know of a rental place somewhat close to the harbor that they could recommend? (I'd love to get my hands on a wee or a vee, but that might be hoping for too much.)

I don't know where you were in Italy, but the northern Italy is not so a poor place (ok, it seems more poor than Switzerland). Southern is realy like you say.

In the Northern Areas of Milano: Lombardia, South Tirol,... there is no problem. This are also the best places for motorcycling (go there)!

But your right: At the great (transit) roads, Crime is a problem! They also know, where are the tourists and where they get something!!

In the rural (northern) areas, the people are very friendly and crime should not be a Problem. But a lot of people there don't understand English.

I was just looking at that website http://www.cimt.it/rental.htm. Are those prices what you normally pay? US$ 140 per day for the V-Strom (the least expensive) is too much for me. A rental car for a week incl insurance is about US$ 350. I would love to ride but $1000 a week?

I am planning a week in January and being able to ride a motorcycle would be awesome. What would the weather be like in January?

Dakarrider, you REALLY need to talk to Tagesk (Tage). Over on ADVRider, check out his "Riding in Tuscany" thread in Ride Reports.

He's a foodie, a conniseur of good wine, loves a perfect espresso, and a fellow rider to boot. His company, Si Toscana even has two Transalps for hire.

Oh, and I have no connection to him or his business, only what I have read on his ride report.

Good luck...
