Hi,
had today hard time starting my 2019 650xt after it was sitting for few days.
Cranking strong but no start, after 15 minut of trying with open throttle etc
it started choking from time to time but when I gassed it died again.
After a while started again and being on idle for 10 minutes all started to work fine
so I went for a ride, all good now but I wonder what was that? it's not even cold outside.
The only thing I did was installing oxford heated grips while bike was in garage so had to disconnect battery for a moment.
Could this cause some problems? or maybe bad fuel?
I guess I have to remove that EVAP crap sooner then I thought.
I don't think the evap crap has anything to do with it. Occasionally if I try to use the throttle too quickly or during the start process it will not start and then I have to open the throttle a bit to get it to have the right air fuel to make it go.
It's mostly a matter of bad timing of the wrist.
GW has written up the proper sequence, google it.
My 2017 was doing this. The starter would turn over strong but the bike struggled to fire. Longer it sat, worse it was. Once after sitting for 3 weeks it just wouldn't fire at all (bike always kept on battery tender).
Poured a healthy dose of Mechanic in a Bottle in the tank before long ride one day and haven't had the problem since. Fires right up every time. I think I had some moisture in the tank. That stuff is good at getting water to burn out. Plenty of other products do the same.
Water or other contaminates could have been introduced at the last gas station.
If the bike eventually started fine then ran fine lends me to believe its not a fuel issue but a fluke. Unless its reoccurring there is really nothing to do. As stated before the evap canister while it does not hurt to remove it will do nothing to find/remedy the root cause of the issue you had.
when riding in different locations (travelling) it is almost impossible to get gas at every single station
that is free of water contamination. Try to pick stations that are newer in appearance ( still no guaranty )
But the chances may be less you will get bad gas. Be cause a motorcycle tank is much smaller than a car
it does not take much water in the fuel to ruin your day or your bike. Thankfully there are some good
chemical additives to dry out the fuel and get you back to normal pretty fast. it would be best to
pump out what fuel is in the tank and check for water, it will settle on the bottom.
yeah, I just wonder if water of other contamination is more possible with this tank vent closed with charcoal canister....
Venting out to the air makes more sense in that regards when moisture gather on empty part of the tank.
Also try to get ethanol free gas if available in your area.
