Pushed the 650 hard, seems to like it

Drove about 1000 miles over the last couple of days in Upstate New York, Lake Champlain. (Great area to witness July 4th!!)
Was riding with an old friend on a ZX 1400R. I was on my low miles 2017 650. It was very hot out.(up tp 33c)
Did a lot of passing just trying to keep away from packs of cars. Floored a lot and revved out a lot either trying to keep up with the ZX14 or stay away from big Trucks doing 80-85 MPH on Canadian super slab.. Bike did great and I have to say the Russel sport seat, lets me ride all day and be comfy. The bike is covered in Bugs. One thing I noticed. In this heat I'd say 95% of all riders I saw were wearing nothing but a T shirt. Most had no gloves. Mind you, they did look more comfy than I was, roasting in Full gear even wearing an air bag vest.

I think I will go with the Honda 600 front brakes, and my Tutoro chain oiler spat out enough oil to cover a half inch of my tire....which is a worry. It never occurred to me that a seriously bad person, could put me at risk by just touching that adjustment screw. Hmmmn.

The 650 seems to be wanting to rev out nicely as it now has about 1,600 miles.

Also, riding at night on the highway is something I will avoid going forward. Can't see any risks from road debris at all. Ride Safe!!

What brand air bag vest do you have and how do you like wearing it?

Hi Nicad,

I ride that area a lot on my 2005 DL650. We have a summer place in upstate NY near Plattsburgh. Fun roads but agree with you regarding night riding there. I wear the Helite vest over a mesh jacket when it's warm or full leather when its cooler. I don't notice the extra weight too much and it doesn't seem to add to much hot either. I've never had it deploy, hope it never does. I always clip it on each time I get on the bike.. Costly but may save me one day.

The 650 is a great bike! You might consider some beefier fork springs to avoid brake dive.

Confused about the trucks though, they are all speed limited to 105 km/hr where did you run into ones going 135???

The Wee Strom will get and sing in the higher rpms . It's fun to get there occasionally but it usually means you are really moving too. You may get a speed award for the effort.
I got the Helite jacket on sale for slightly less than the vest and it seems to do OK in hot weather. It's So so in cold weather with a Gerbing under it.
One does have to remember to click the lanyard though!

Pretty sure a bunch of trucks were going more than 105. Last Month in Utah, I was doing 65 MPH and the big trucks were also blasting by me. I was on the 401 coming back to Toronto via the Thousand islands border crossing.

i have a high Viz Hellite Turtle vest. It is comfortable to wear. I was also wearing BMW airflow jacket and pants, and was roasting unless moving at a good clip. The Givi airflow fairing keeps more air than I'd like off me in hot weather.
Surprised how many Vstrom folks wear vests. I must have seen a few hundred bikes yesterday. Again, all in T shirts

The 650 engine is a gem. It makes about the same horsepower as a 1978 BMW R100T or a 1978 Honda 750cc inline-4 except those bikes are 575 lbs and the power band of the V-Twin has its maximum torque at lower RPM's.

That said, it does not mind redline to redline shifts one bit and the sweet spot is at, or above, the 5k mark on the tachometer. This makes it a great bike in the mountains of New England and New York or here in Virginia. Not so much at higher elevations like those found in say, Colorado. It simply runs out of juice.

For the slab ride, there is ample evidence that the motor will run all day at 6k to 7k on the tach without complaint (although some find it will suck oil through the breather during extended slab runs).

Evidently, the Suzuki 650 V-Twin likes to be flogged regularly!

BTW, I had a '78 C550k when I lived in NH....great bike and it found its way to ME, NH, VT, NY and MA before making its way to VA in a trailer full of crap! Sold it to a local fellow in VA several years ago and ran into him at a wedding last year. Bike is still running strong and fires at the touch of the starter button--or one kick!

I road my 650 like I stole it through 8 states, sick delicious curvy roads, and slabbed for hundreds of miles over 10 days. That bike can take whatever you want to throw at it.

I have one as well in orange. Was curious because I came across the Ixon airbag u03 which is more compact, fits under the jacket and wireless so no lanyard and the cost is less than the Helite. I may try that at some point.
