Question about locks on your Adventure cases

I sold a 2010 BMW R1200GSA and got a 2012 DL650 Adventure. When I picked up the bike, the salesman was showing me the cases and the key snapped off.

I took the bike and they fixed the cases, I assume by putting a new lock set into them. They said it would be a "heavy duty" key.

I just got the cases delivered today and notice something weird. If I leave "Top" latch unlocked the latch won't close all the way. Basically to get the latch closed and key out, I need to lock the top every time. The weirdest part is I don't have to lock the mounting latch to get the key out.

Would someone please check your boxes and see if you need to lock the top to get the key out everytime? Also, can you check and see if you can pull the key out in the unlocked position on the mounting latches?

Thanks!

It's just I was surprised at first that it wasn't like BMW where ignition key also unlocked boxes. Then to find that I will need to fiddle with the lock every time I open or close the box is a bit more then I expected.

Did they, by chanc

Dang send button!!

Did they by chance put the wrong lockset on the wrong latch? Should the mounting latch require being locked every time to remove key and top not?

Yes. In order to get the key out, the box has to be locked. However this CAN be modified. I have a "how to" post on modifying the locks so you can pull the key out in an UNLOCKED position.

here ya go...

Sfalexi, Where did you get those nice, bigger keys? Mine are little, kinda cheap ones.

1 key?

When I got my adventure I got 2 bike keys and only 1 trax case key. Is that typical?

aerosol graphite is your friend on the new side case locks as well as in the ignition.

On a slightly different note, do the rest of you have ONE key to fit all three boxes? I bought my DL1000-ADV over the weekend and was dismayed to discover that the top box takes one key while the side boxes share a common key. Is this normal? Can I order a set of three matching locks somewhere, or just a top-box lock to match the side case locks???????

Thanks,
Tom

Mine don't need to lock to get the key out, the latch hooks, but the pull tab thing sticks out a little, but it stays shut tight. The locks on the Adventure side cases are awful, but graphite helps a lot, they are usually worse after riding in the rain, so I open the key hole with a small knife and pour a little more graphite in there. I don't have a top case but one key opens both side cases, one of the bike magazines had an article this month on the Wee and mentioned having different keys for each.

I thought that was the case! I guess by saving $12,000 over a BMW you pay the price!

1 key for ignition
1 key for side cases
1 key for top box.

On BMW I just sold you had 1 key for all of the above.

Oh well, For less then $12,000 I'm sure you could get them all re-keyed!
