I mean 200cc - 300 cc of oil is the difference between Low and High marks .
It takes a lot longer than 5 min to get oil up to temperature. Coolant perhaps but not oil. I suspect 10 to 20 minutes at least and likely longer to get the oil to boiling point as the oil cooler is so efficient. Plus 2012+ DL650's have a history of showing condensation in the oil level sight Guage.

Hi JonathanAU
Rode to Darwin two up last May, 2013 Vstrom.
33 to 37 Celsius most days, no oil drop at all.
Speeds 100 to 120kms.
I'd say maybe the drops could have something to do with it.
Top up ride again and check.
I"m sure the air box would have a drain tube, so maybe bike upright ride away and oil in box drained off.
If all good after next ride no worries.
Enjoy

Harry

There is no designated low spot in the air box that I know of for a drain tube. It would have to have a valve in it to keep air from being sucked in from that too.
What goes in the air box stays in the air box until it gets cleaned out.

Very high temps and long rides tend to burn a little oil, from my experience. But, my experience is not on the Wee. My Super Tenere burned 1/2 quart going through Death Valley. It was the only time it ever used any oil. I had to look up the Celsius to F . 39 C is 102 f . I'm sure it was 130F going through the valley!

It hit 126F when I went through Death Valley in 2011 on my 2006 DL650. (Actual moving at speed temperature.)

Rode a 2012 with 42,000kms from sydney to adelaide in 43c temps after buying it, no noticeable oil usage over 1,400kms. Same engine at 61,000kms no oil usage issues, you can buy that engine if you want- cheap too!

Got thinking about no drain on air box and there has to be one.
See from manual.
Jonathon pull this plug and see if any oil present, worth a look.

Oil bath and severe mechanical action will cause oil to atomize.

Atomized oil will leave with the blow by gas

Oil/air separator in airbox will not collected very small atomized droplets

Atomized droplets will be drawn in to the intake and lubricate the top end

it's a feature !
