The Wee is howling.

I just completed a multi-day trip on my 2012 DL650. About midway through Day 1 I noticed what I can best describe as a loud, persistent howling sound.

My observations:
- Occurs only between 46-49 mph.
- It happens in all gears.
- Louder upon deceleration.
- Front tire is a Shinko 705 (70% on-road, 30% off-road) with around 4000 miles on it, worn about 10%.
- Rear tire is Shinko 705 with over 8000 miles on it, worn about 90% (planning to nurse it to the end of the season, then replace).
- Road surface didn't make any difference (road concrete, blacktop, and gravel).

I'm hoping it's just whine from the slightly knobbied tire. I'm concerned it could be wheel bearings.

Thoughts?

If it's a good day to wash the bike, it's a better day to ride the bike.

Yup, it's that howling front 705. That's exactly where it howled.
I'm glad to be rid of mine.

Keep calm and ride on, the 705 Shinko’s make some noise.

Wear earplugs. I've worn out a few sets and never noticed any noise.

No earplugs, but noise-reducing earbuds.

Interesting that it didn't start until I was on my trip.

ANY tire with open areas between tread blocks is going to make some road noise. 705's certainly do. TKC 70's will make the 705 seem quiet. All are worse when treadwear patterns develop. That speed range is where they are often the most obvious. Simply part of the compromise you deal with when buying and using tires with off highway ratings. The more aggressive, the more noise.

Try packing a small bag of earplugs in the speaker area - that area resonates like crazy and will magnify a howl big time.

My k60s would howl at speed and I accidentally discovered that resonance ....

My 18 1000 came with Battlewings(Shallow, non aggressive tread) and by 5K the front was howling as much as the 705's on my 650. Didn't expect that.
