click at shutdown

What is that sound the bike makes when you shut down the motor. It's like CLICK - sometimes quite loud, sometimes very faint, very faint. My buddy's GS does the same sound (I heard from someone here that it's stepper motor) I had the bike for almost 3 years now and it's been doing that since day one, so I'm not too worried, but I still would like to understand the mechanics behind the noise.
Thank you,

It's been happening since 2007. The ISC valve is set by a stepper motor after shutdown.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.

Great but does anyone know why sometimes it is quite clear to hear, while other times it's very faint click.

It depends on how far the stepper motor has to move to get to the default position.

Greywolf - Let me ask you this. I noticed over 3 years that after shutdown if I don't hear the CLICK and try to start the bike within few minutes (after fueling) the bike will backfire through throttle bodies. I wonder if the lack of click has something to do with that. Maybe it's time for throttle body synch? The bike has 14K miles on it.

There could be a problem with the ISC valve or throttle body linkage sticking or the connections between the throttle bodies being obstructed so the stepper motor can't set the ISC valve to the proper position. A TBS is not indicated.

In your experience, if this is intermittent what sort of obstruction could it be? I think I Will remove the tank and air box before Winter storage to take a peak at the throttle bodies.

I haven't heard of anyone reporting such a problem. I can only surmise what might cause it based on what the components do. A stepper motor is to a regular motor like one flight of stairs are to a nearly infinite ramp. The range of travel is limited and the movement is done in a series of steps.
