Luggage Key Broke Off in the Lock

so I rode the bike to work today with the panniers on. I carried my laptop in the left pannier.

When I went to leave I could not get the key to go into the lock. I messed with it until the outer shiny cover on the lock fell off. Then the two tiny little springs fell out - but the lock opened. I put the bag in the pannier and rode home.

When I got home, the key went in the lock easily. I turned it, the lock opened, and the key ring flew out of my hand. The key snapped off in the lock!

Now if I can find the spare key (I think there is a spare, right?) the trax crap is coming off and I will use them for planters or something.

Very disappointed in these bags.

I'm surprised I don't have a half dozen replies telling me what a dumbass I am.

I found the spare key last night. Before I used it though, it occured to me I should lube the locks first. I can't afford to break my last key. I could not find my graphite powder, so I decided to hit it with WD-40 instead.

Did you know the "WD" in "WD-40" stands for "water displacement"? That's when I remembered that I washed the bike last Sunday.

I should have lubed the locks right after the wash.

Oh well. I hope I can get the broken lock repaired under warranty.

If I have to buy a new lock, can anyone recommend better locks than the ones that come with these bags? I had problems with the locks sticking on my other DL650 also.

Thanks

Just installed replacement locks which are cheap and MUCH better.
Because I'm new to the forum it won't let me include a URL link but go to twistedthrottle.com

I have the OEM suzuki cases which are identical to the Trax...for me, lots of silicone lube works best...the locks loosened up after a year of use and are fine now.

I simply removed the locks, very easy to do, just a clip behind the latch. I got really tired of having to use the key everytime I wanted in the bag.

Here ya go RadRider.

SW-MOTECH Bags-Connection Lock set for 3 TraX EVO ALU-BOX cases - TwistedThrottle.com

I put these lock sets on my 2012 Adventure 650 and they work so much better than the stock locks/keys. Don't ditch the boxes because of crappy locks/keys mrbreeze. Get these and your boxes will become the least of your worries.

Can I remove them while locked?

Which of the above SW-Motech products would I use for a 2014 Adventure with stock hard cases?

Thanks.

Giving this one a bump. Anyone know which lockset would be suitable for a 2014 650 Adventure with stock cases?

I can see problems arising in the future. They are already really sticky and hard to open.

Thanks!
