Air box question

Thanks to posters who went to the trouble to record how to remove the fuel tank and access the air filter box.

I managed the job with few issues ( O.K. the fuel pipe disconnection was a bit tricky) . When I did get into the air box I noticed a area on the left side that was filled with a coarse grade foam. I am assuming this has some function but it escaped me what it might be. Possibly in some countries it has an anti-pollution role? (Mine is an Australian model)

I fitted a oiled pool filter sock over the snorkel intake tube as a pre filter.

The "foam" in the air box is there to condense oil vapors coming from the crankcase. Ideally they will go back to liquid and run back down the tube. It also serves to keep debris from getting into the crankcase through the vent tube.
