Removing clutch cover questions.

How to adjust the clutch is well covered on other threads in this forum once the clutch cover is removed. The manual directs you to clutch removal instructions for how to take the cover off. My question is do you have to do all of the following to take the cover off if you're not removing the clutch?

drain oil
drain coolant
remove rear brake light switch
remove front footrest bracket
disconnect the four hoses going into the cover

It's clear that the oil must be drained before removing the cover. The scheduled maintenance calls for the clutch cable play to be inspected every 3500 miles and the coolant replaced after 14500 miles. If the coolant has to be drained do you reuse it? Can the 7 bolts be removed without taking the brake light switch and footrest bracket off? Am I reading the manual correctly that the cover should be removed at each scheduled service.

You don't have to take the clutch cover off to adjust the cable. Clutch adjustment requiring the removal of the clutch cover only needs to be done if the clutch is slipping no matter what adjustments are made to the external clutch linkage. Clutch free play adjustment isn't even in the periodic maintenance chart it is so rarely needed.

14,500 miles is the interval between valve clearance checks. Doing that is much easier if the radiator is removed. That's when I'd change the coolant.

If it really is necessary to take the cover off, I would do as instructed in the manual. It is rarely needed and makes the job easier. It should be at least 50,000 miles before adjustment is necessary unless the clutch is abused. I think I may rebuild or replace the water pump too at that point.

How many miles do you have on your bike?

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Thanks for the quick reply Greywolf. My bike has a little over 7500 miles and the clutch is working fine. I thought the manual was indicating the clutch adjustment was part of the inspection while doing the maintenance. Thanks for the detailed explanation.
