600 mile service

can you do the first service yourself or do you need to pay high dealership service dept. fees ? does it void your warranty

You can do it yourself. Keep a log of dates and mileages to record your service and keep receipts for stuff like oil and filters. The warranty stays in effect.

Pat- 2007 DL650A was ridden to all 48 contiguous states. I didn't quite make it to 17,000 miles on the 2012 DL650A.
Nicknames I use to lessen typing, Vee = 2002-2012 DL1000s. Vee2=2014-2016 DL1000s. Wee = 2004-2011 DL650s. Glee = 2012-2016 DL650s

Compared to the $50 in materials to change my oil, the $65 or so the dealer charged me for the 600 mile service wasn't that bad.

for $65 it's unlikely that your dealer did a complete service, there is more to it than changing oil and filter

The 600 mile service is:

Change oil
check/tighten exhaust bolts
Inspect throttle cable play
Inspect chain
Inspect brakes
Inspect steering
Tighten chassis bolts/nuts

It pretty much is an oil change

and you trust a dealer to do that properly in 10 minutes or less

You must be buying gold plated filters. I just bought the stuff for my oil change, and it was 16 bucks for three quarts of oil and 11 bucks for a Suzuki filter.

I did my own 600 miles service and there is no way a dealer can do this in 10 minutes. Maybe I'm anal or something but I went through the bike with a couple of torque wrenches and checked the torque on all the hardware as spec'd in the manual. The manual has a pretty comprehensive procedure for this service. I guess if you grabbed a couple of wrenches and just checked all the easy stuff you could do it in 10 minutes.

L2 DL650 Adventure

bike X miles=smiles
smiles ÷ bike=miles
miles ÷ smiles=bike.
It's simple math.

I did mine myself, everything but the rear cylinder exhaust bolts. I couldn't figure out how to reach them. Dealer said was ok to do it myself, just keep records.
